The Brian Bolland Cover Appreciation Thread
malvin replied to Jasonmorris1000000's topic in Copper Age Comic Books
I normally only post and read in the original art forums, but I saw this as a popular thread and thought I would drop by. I also realize that everyone here is talking about comics, but here are 2 Brian Bolland Original Covers I own: Judge Dredd Issue 30 (Comicartfans Link) Amazing Heroes Issue 52 cover (Comicartfans Link) Malvin -
All of the above for me, although I wasn't going to as many conventions lately (even before COVID). If I had to rank by volume of pages, my order would be: Auctions, Dealers, Conventions, Artists. Conventions are fun as you often see art that is not online and I have on many occasions but tons of pages at once from some artists. Malvin

I think that's the OP selling! Malvin

Your collecting style: Eras? Artists? Titles? A mix?
malvin replied to Dr. Balls's topic in Original Comic Art
Sorry, scattershot probably best describes my collecting habits. it's basically OA from any comic I read and enjoyed. I did stop reading new comics so I'm limited to comics from the late 80s to the early 2000's. However, I still buy art outside of that if I like it, and what I "like" is broad and not easily defined! Purchasing less due to poor stock market results
malvin replied to KirbyCollector's topic in Original Comic Art
does that mean your budget/purchase plans will change if the stock market recovers within 2022? Malvin -
Brian has been in the Victoria area for awhile actually, so I'm sure he will take CAD (obviously with a conversion factor relative to US prices) He might not have any pre-done sketches though. Good luck Malvin

Heritage September 2022 comic and art auction
malvin replied to drdonaldblake1's topic in Original Comic Art
They are? Never noticed. Comiclink has them for like 30 days, are they longer? Malvin -
Marcus Wai is Awesome and the joy of getting feedback
malvin replied to grapeape's topic in Original Comic Art
You forgot to add the reason of people just searching for specific art later on. I don't scan all the new uploads as often as I use to, but once in awhile I search a particular artist, character, artist/character combo or other search terms, and would click things then (especially when I didn't see it when it was newly uploaded) Malvin -
Heritage September 2022 comic and art auction
malvin replied to drdonaldblake1's topic in Original Comic Art
If there is a justifiable reason I am sure they are reasonable. Not HA but I won the Alan Davis Nail cover on comiclink a few years ago, then I saw posts (here?) that it was a recreation because the original was lost, and I did't have to pay (they wanted to check who said it, and I linked them to Alan Davis website that said it) Malvin -
Nah, the AI's will have their own AI reps! No dirty humans required! Malvin

Low cost or low end? Maybe I'm being picky on Mondays :P I think most people in a general context would not consider $3K low cost. The OA side is more subjective. I think these days anything under $1K is lower end, while 3K still gets you very nice art. That might change soon if the current appreciation pace continues unabated! Malvin

Art behind glass: Show off your framed art!
malvin replied to Stronguy's topic in Original Comic Art
Wow! When you started collecting SS OA you went all in! Congrats on these pages. Malvin -
https://www.cnn.com/2022/09/03/tech/ai-art-fair-winner-controversy/index.html I read that article and my first thought was that it could be used to draw comics soon. Thoughts? Malvin

ah! ok. I thought you were talking about just Zeck Punisher cover recreations. Malvin -
punisher 1 limited series cover by zeck
malvin replied to drdonaldblake1's topic in Original Comic Art
Hey Jason, Can you clarify what you meant by this? There are 5 covers, and each one of them have sold at least twice since they were first re-created. Did 2 other covers recently sell? (along with the #2 at $18K by Burkey?) Malvin -
punisher 1 limited series cover by zeck
malvin replied to drdonaldblake1's topic in Original Comic Art
I think he consignor is a regular boardie (unless the pieces have changed hands a couple of times already since he got it) and Yes, you would be lucky to get a sketch out of Zeck, definitely no commissions and even when he did recreations he limited them (and insisted on changes, so no exact ones) Malvin -
Heritage September 2022 comic and art auction
malvin replied to drdonaldblake1's topic in Original Comic Art
I think that might be the norm for everyone in the future IF prices continue to go up. It's so hard to judge value these days. Malvin -
The OFFICIAL "This week in your ORIGINAL ART collection?"
malvin replied to mister_not_so_nice's topic in Original Comic Art
I was lucky enough to have won a couple of the Tim Sale Captain America: White that were being auctioned by comiclink. I just got them (I batch my purchases) and just uploaded them to CAF: Issue 1 Cover Issue 2 cover Thanks for looking Malvin -
You have quite a few questions and many things are subjective. Here are some of my opinions. This one covers both pacing, budget: Buy what you like and what you are comfortable in buying. When I started, I had a psychological barrier to spending above a certain amount (at the time it was $500) on a specific piece. It was quite artificial and meaningless (e.g. I wouldn't spend $600 on one piece but was ok with spending $600 on 2 pieces), eventually I overcame that barrier (I mean, wouldn't you spend $10K on a piece if it was worth 20K?). This one is on your question about artists: It's not quite the same thing, and you aren't saying that, but you know what you like, so don't "force" yourself to like someone because their style is similar to someone you like or lots of people recommend them. I tend to know what I like when I see it. I don't "speculate" and buy art I don't like thinking that they would be the next big thing. Lastly, I don't collect artist proofs and most collectors don't, but they sell so there is a market. I don't follow it but I think some have sold for less than what the artist originally sold it for. Is your page a DC page? they are slightly larger so I use 12 x18 mylar on them. One of my pet peeves is that all OA is not the same size, bugs me more when the same run has different sized (I store mine by size, so they would be in different piles if different sizes, despite being the same run) Malvin

It's a quiet day so I'll play I previously just linked to my CAF pages that were tagged as "Double Page Spreads" and "Double Page Splashes" but I realized when I saw all this talk of vertical splashes that my double covers were not included (since they were classified as covers) so here they are: 1. Alan Moore Supreme Issue 42 Double Vertical Cover - CAF Link 2. Mike Grell Green Arrow Longbow Hunters Double Cover Painting - CAF Link 3. Wizard Issue 200 Jam cover by Hitch, McNiven, Quesada, Turner, and Miki - CAF Link Malvin

So... What happened to Mr. Machismo and his collection?
malvin replied to MagnusX's topic in Original Comic Art
He isn't selling a page but asking what happened to the seller. Malvin
