  1. The switch from Sal Buscema to Frank Robbins on "Captain America and the Falcon" was quite the shock to my 10-year old eyes at the time.
  2. Is there some color touch (with a ballpoint pen) in the hatching on Spidey's arm?
  3. Well, this was my best round yet... only 6 pts. The problem is I was off by 10 pts in each of the other three rounds.
  4. Was this problem ever resolved? This is very scary!
  5. In the first two rounds, I was consistently under by 1.0 (two grades). So, my strategy for round three was to add 1.0 (two grades) to the grades I thought they were. Guess what? I was high by two grades on every book! So much for strategy.
  6. If nothing else, my performance in this contests gives me hope for my Hulk 181 that joeypost has that will be submitted to CGC. I have it anywhere from 6.0 to 7.5. Since my grading in this contest has been harsher than CGC--with one exception--maybe my Hulk 181 will be a 9.8!
  7. I understand that books submitted under different tiers will be shipped back separately due to their different TATs. I have a book that I've been wanting to get reholdered for quite some time, but it doesn't make sense financially since the cost of reholdering plus shipping to/from CGC is well more than the comic's value. Can the return shipping of a reholdered comic be combined with that of a graded comic that has a similar TAT? In my case, I'd like to have comic graded in the Economy (Pre - 1975) tier with fast track which has a TAT of 79 days. The current reholder (less than $1000 value) TAT is 78 days. I would not have neither of these done on their own, but I would if I could combine the return shipping.
  8. They can detect it when they press it themselves (CCS), and they don't note it. They will never do something that cuts into their own business. While better than the old wild west days of buying ungraded comics, the purpose of third-party grading is not to protect those in the hobby... it's to make money.

    Grader notes

Me too. Unless they want to charge less for a graded book for which they don't provide graders' notes.
  10. Unfortunately, you are correct. I have an older slab (I purchased the book already slabbed many years ago) that has the same problem. It looks like .
  11. I thought "Marvel chipping" was only on books from the late 50s to the early 60s. I could be wrong--and I usually am--but I doubt the edge wear on a very late 1969 book would be from Marvel chipping and would just be normal edge wear.
  12. My first thought was 6.0, but I think the defects on the back in combination with the obvious defects on the front cover may bring it down to a 5.5. It's a nice looking 5.5, though.
  13. I have a Fantastic Four 174 CGC 8.5 OW/W for sale. I'd like to get $28 plus $16 USPS Priority mail shipping. I only ship within the continental U.S., and I accept PayPal. No buyer from the probation list. I'll accept a return within 7 days in the same condition as I sent it, but return shipping is at your cost. There is soiling on the back cover along the spine that could probably be cleaned up and resubmitted for a grade bump, if you are so inclined. There are a few CB spine ticks near Mr. Fantastic's ribs/arm pit.
  14. Beautiful book! One of my favorite FF covers. I loved the John Buscema/Joe Sinnott art in this book.
  15. I paid way too much for this, but I finally completed my graded run of FF 140 - 200. The first comic I purchased as a kid was FF 149, so I wanted to complete a run of FF over the time frame that I collected them in my youth. I've got four 8.5's that I'd like to upgrade eventually, but I'm happy for now. Here's the breakdown: 8.5 = 4 9.0 = 12 9.2 = 15 9.4 = 18 9.6 = 11 9.8 = 1
  16. Thanks! Yes, I've been eyeing that 187 for a while, but I'm not sure if I can go that high. Comiclink has a 9.4, but the wrap isn't very good. I've been looking for one in the 9.2 to 9.4 range. I've got a couple of raw candidates, but I've never actually gotten anything graded before--I've only purchased graded copies. The shipping to/from CGC for a single book would make this a pretty expensive option.
  17. It's not easy to find them. I've actually never had a book graded myself (although, that may change if I ever hope to get #187 to finish my #140-200 run). I bought my first CGC-graded book on the forums here in 2010. In addition to the forums, I've picked up a few on eBay and comiclink. I'm not able to afford a high-grade run like most on here. If I can find a nicely-presenting comic in at least 8.5, I'm okay with that. Here's my run so far (other 3rd-party graders whited-out). My 9.4 #200 isn't shown in the scan, but I've got it (only lacking the #187). Update... I went back and added up the cost of my FF #140-200 run (minus the missing #187 of course). I've spent $2,036 on this including shipping. Since I've purchased these one book at a time for the most part, the shipping has absolutely killed me.
