  1. I also saw this DC Super Pac sell.  Interestingly the seller claimed that packs such as this were sealed with industrial staples.  I've never examined a 4-pack like this in person and so at first I thought this was BS, but then checking around I found images for two other DC SuperPacs 4-packs that were similarly stapled!  How wonderfully wild and crazy!

I really need to develop some skillz to be able to patch together images such as this, but anyway, here's how the pics were shared.

Whenever I see a 9.8 newsstand issue, I think to myself "How in the heck is that possible?".  I would think that simple act of placing a comic book in a rack would keep it from remaining a 9.8.  I recall Waldenbooks was still placing comic books on the spinning racks in the early 2000's.  So to those folks who own 9.8 newsstand issues, I ask the following question.... How did you find that comic book?   Did you work at the store where they were sold, and were you able to get a copy before it was even placed on the rack?

Way Back When, as a youngster, I bought plenty of new comics from spinner racks at 7-11, Pangles, or Lawson's stores and the comics at those stores were certainly prone to damage.  But I also shopped at the Rexall drug store where the comics got superior treatment.  At Rexall there was no spinner rack, instead they neatly stacked their comics on the same display shelves alongside the magazines where they were much less likely to suffer any bending damage.   So not every newsstand comic started off in a spinner rack, no doubt there were other venues such as Rexall where the comics had a better than average chance to avoid serious damage.

    B-8 = LL85, SM 209, ADV 371, B+B 79.

    A-4 = LL 91, SM 215, MM 37, A+H 42.

    A-8 = BM 183, JLA 46, FLASH 163, WF 159.

I've been told the cardboard headers are not very common.

Those packs are AMAZING.  Thanks for the details!

That is actually a good question.  I am not really sure. I know that there are several that have the Logo at the top as you see on the Animaniacs #16 above, but there are not that many that I can think of off the top of my head that have it in place of where a direct or upc box other that the two you mentioned and this Animaniacs.  I will now have to try to go through my boxes and see if I have any others.

Here's a 3-pack that shows some relationship between DC Universe issues and WB Reading logo issues.  But it doesn't have any labeling to indicate how/where/who distributed and sold it.   The middle issue might be the Superboy #0 Zero Hour issue.

Those are fantastic!  Thanks for sharing.   I've never seen one of these in person, so I didn't even realize that any of the old DC 4 packs had a cardboard header.   Have you identified the issue numbers of the comics inside these packs?

I finally tracked some of mine down

I think I've seen this pack before, it apparently contains Ghosts #10, Weird Western Tales #15, and Weird Worlds #3.  But I've not seen the other side of the pack to know which comic is visible.  Care to share another pic to show that side?

  7. Here are my ideas:

    1. Thor 337

    4. Predator 1 (first Dark Horse app)

    5. Usagi Yojimbo 1

    8. Sheena Queen Of The Jungle 3-D (double cover)

    10. Batman 635

    11. TMNT 4 (second print)

    13. Marvel Spotlight 28

    14. Avengers 196

    16. Daredevil 9 (first Echo)

    18. X-Men 129

    1. ASM Annual 1

    3. Fantastic Four 49

    6. Terrors Of The Jungle 17 (LB Cole cover)

There are quite a few copies on eBay as it goes Warlord, so you've actually identified a thing - the apparent wide-spread repricing of that issue by sticker, pre the printed price change. It's not a UKPV though, so you only get a bronze medal for the discovery

I figured it was more of a curiosity type find, rather than a "help me retire early" kind of find.  lol

  9. For posterity, I'll post this Superman #404 in the correct thread along with Get Marwood & I's helpful commentary on this issue.

That's a 1985 book you have there and DC UK Price Variants were long gone by then. Under that sticker will be a dual US/UK printed price, with the UK one being 30p. Stickers weren't that uncommon as it goes, although that's quite a late one, and right before the printed price change to 35p - someone clearly wanted an extra early 5p!

Also maybe this post can give this thread a jump start.  It's no surprise I stumbled into the Marvel thread what with this DC thread having a 4 year gap since the last post!

Cool info, thanks for the explanation (and directions to the correct thread! lol ).   So apparently a comic retailer was ahead of the price increase curve.  I agree, why wait for the publisher to do it?  ;)

  11. Is it unusual or common to find a pence sticker on the cover like this?  I didn't see anything in the indicia to suggest this is anything other than a US version with a sticker over the price.

I don't know much about these, but figured this is the place to learn more.
