Great stuff.  And a Thin Man sighting - excellent!  Powell and loy weren't together, but everybody thought they were because they were so darn good together on screen.  Great movies!

Real Life #48, Feb 1949

These Real Life covers crack me up how they mix up some scene with all sorts of literary and historical figures.  Rattlesnake Dick! Emile Zola! Baldy of the Snow!

Five Points News Center Jacksonville Florida

That is a photo of the Five Points News Center in Jacksonville Florida. As in life, things change and almost nothing lasts forever. Here is a nostalgic look at the newsstand and a few more photos.

Great info!

Killer post jpep.  I don't think I'd ever have guessed this was Jacksonville.  Date might be a tad off on the middle photo, hard to tell.

I love pics like this. They give you a lot of context for the rise of comics in the 30s/40s… and remind you that comics were a triumph of “format” (cheap, easily printed and distributed, disposable) as well as content.

This is just like winding up the key in the back of that robot of yours, Bob lol :o  Setting the ten minute timer here :Rocket:

Start with the DD May 1940

classics (I know that's a sensitive word around here lol) get the big pics (these others grabbed quickly from homie Phil Stephensen-Payne's incredible index)

Ten minutes is up, but I can't stop now! So close!

Classic?  Not exactly, but I know it's one you sicko WM collectors really like :D  Pretty sure there's a much more striking copy on the Shudders via Detective35 lol

H.W. Scott did a long starting run on The Avenger, some iconic covers.

Argh, so close.  I'm stumped on the DFW (shrug)

A, tight well run little rack there, almost everything exactly May 1940.  Pines, Munsey, Street and Smith, Popular, Ace, Ziff-Davis.  I have the feeling I could learn something about the distributors and their tendencies by seeing which mags are excluded where and the orderliness/timeliness of the newsstands but have never dug into it too much.

I like to ID the pulps on comic photos or poor neglected magazines but this was fun to run down as pure pulp.

and a Life :p

177-1.jpg

Ooh, and hiding this one which is on my huntlist for scanning/history reasons, involved in a key court case regarding obscenity.  Maybe they were hiding it back there (and you do see some of the more salacious ones tend to get tucked behind).  If you see this issue for sale, let me know!
