HULK 181 CGC 9.9?
1 1

488 posts in this topic

It would be hard pressed ( :insane: ) for me just by the scans to even consider that Hulk #181 CGC 9.9 to in fact be a 9.9 anymore.

I trust since Gene said he saw it in his hand that the book suffered some SCS. So more than likely should the book ever be reholdered that book may go down to a 9.6, and maybe keep a grade of 9.8 after it was pressed to correct most of the SCS.

I looked over the book very closely and my opinion was that there's no way it would have gotten a 9.9 had it been cracked out and resubmitted. I'm skeptical that the book was ever a true 9.9 to begin with, and even from the marginal scans you can tell that it isn't now.

I could be wrong about the next part, as it's been at least 7 years since I saw the book (it was either the '01, '02 or '03 SDCC where I saw it - I was one of the big players in Bronze back then), but I seem to recall that the book had one of the very earliest CGC labels when I saw it - the kind that didn't have the page quality listed. Does anybody recall the same? Was the book reholdered shortly thereafter? If that's the case, it might help to explain why CGC gave that book a 9.9 - it was graded very early on and they didn't have the benefit of having graded hundreds of high grade copies of the book to distinguish between what should be a 9.4/9.6/9.8/9.9.

BUT, even if my mind is cloudy about the labeling part, the book was, in any case, graded fairly early on and that probably makes my last point very applicable anyway. Whether that matters to the ultimate buyer, who'll be buying the rarity of the grade on the label and not necessarily the best preserved copy of Hulk #181, who can say... (shrug)

I remember seeing the book in 2001 and 2003 and recalled a PQ in both instances. Although I didn't really look at the book in hand, I did look at it in 2003 in the display case at SDCC. Like you, I just think that it was a gift grade and that the corners were like that when grading. I recall it looking it the top right corner was just slightly bent over and not true SCS.

Good posts, guys.

For what it's worth, on the CGC 9.9 copies that I have owned (Secret Wars #8, Wolverine Limited Series #1, X-men #140) I have noticed that this sort of stuff (slight bends in the paper) do not affect the grade.

That's why I was so against making judgment on the book without a larger, more clear scan.

Carry on.

:foryou:

Well since Gene/Greggy have seen it and with the scans we are given I would be fairly certain that the book is in fact a 9.6 in a 9.9 holder. lol

Assuming if the book has SCS it probably can't be a 9.8.

9.8 in a 9.9 :rulez:

Greggy,

So are you saying it is still probably a 9.8?

Why not, it's not a big bend. It's like a tiny curl that you see in many 9.8s. That's the issue you see in the CL scan.

Shouldn't you be getting ready to leave town again?

I think it is funny CL sent out a email saying how awesome it was they now have this book finally for salel, and all this thread is just saying much of non-9.9 it is. :ohnoez:

It's irrelevant as many have said because the label says 9.9.

Not sure what CL meant when it says that it hasn't been for sale before.

It's been sold at least twice during the last 10 years. (shrug)

You should've waited until the Spring to move back...unless you enjoy Winter?

I've seen 9.8's that had one tiny little flaw and also 9.8's that had no apparent flaws at all. If 10.0 is absolutely perfect, what kind of defect is allowed at 9.9?

Lease it up or I would, but my goal was to wake up on 01/01 ready to go in my new setting. (thumbs u

Plus I haven't been home for Christmas in now four years, so I really want to spent NYE back on the east coast with my friends and family.

CGC can allow some minor spine ticks, but honestly I don't believe that should hold water. One spine tick should equal no 9.8.

I remember I had a book\ that had 5 spine ticks, so I graded it at 9.2....maybe 9.4. Comes back on site graded at 9.8. :screwy:

$500 bucks later you learn to take the over grade and sell it. lol

Always look at the grade first, and if you agree the book matches the grade buy it.

Chasing labels mean you might have a nice grade with a not so great looking book.

Why does everyone keep talking about what grade the book would get it if it got reholdered? It`s a moot point, because it`ll never get reholdered, unless the owner got assurances from CGC that it would not get regraded in the process of getting reholdered. So the label is going to keep saying 9.9.

To me the whole CGC 9.9 and 10.0 grade is so subjective that I just do not by into it. Every 9.9/10.0 I have seen of books pre-1990 have something where I always say to myself how can this book get a 9.9/10.0.

This I totally agree with. While the insanity may start at 9.6, with me it ends at 9.8. Anything above is like those chase cards in trading cards, it`s totally random.

When this book sells it will be either because the comic book buyer does not know how to grade and trusts CGC, or they will be label chasing only and money is no object.

There are no collectors like that in the market, right? ;)

Hulk #181 while it is probably the most important book of the Bronze Age it is still common as all heck in HG. I am pretty confident that 9.6's will be selling for barely over 2K 5-10 years from now.

OK, cool - so, if you saw it in '01, it must have really been one of the earlier books to get graded, before CGC had the benefit and experience of grading hundreds of HG copies of that book to readily determine between 9.6s/9.8s/9.9s. I recall that even around 2003-4 that there were still only like three to five 9.8 copies of Hulk #181 (as a friend of mine had two of them).

I know a board member that sold one of those uncut Magic the Gathering Beta uncut proof sheets last year for $900, and he thought he did super.

$19,995??!!

While it's not a book that's of any interest to me personally, to ignore the importance of Wolverine and the scale of this book in terms of its nature as a "key" is to put personal opinion in front of reason. This handy chart will help clarify things:

Importance of Marvel Characters:

1. Spider-man

2. Wolverine

3. Who cares, it's not spider-man or Wolverine.

No one`s debating the importance of the book (at least I wasn`t). I just feel that people paying the current asking price for the book in any grade are overpaying. Not because I don`t like the book but because of years of experience observing the comic market.

I agree with you about the current asking price (it's twice what I would value a true 9.9 at), but there's definitely a trend in this thread of people discounting the book entirely because it's not Gold/Silver and therefore beneath notice.

What I DO know is that a Hulk 181 in 9.6 white with outstanding cover registration, as this particular example might now actually grade, goes for less than $7K.

Which is still too much for an ultra-common BA book, no matter whose first appearance is inside.

Plus, it`s not even really a first appearance.

+1. Hulk 181 is so common it is scary. I actually can't imagine paying more than 1k to 2k for a 9.6 and even that would mean I was drunk when ibought it.

And I can't imagine paying what you pay for the comics in your collection. Despite the comics in your collection apparently being cooler than the comics in my collection. ;)

His last two movies destroyed Wolverine at the box office and his latest animated series was renewed for high ratings while the Wolverine animated series was cancelled. I put him at two for now,his licensed merchandise outsold Spider-man`s last year(kinda shocked Disney). One to watch for future generations. 2c

:jokealert:

(At least a couple of people laughed)

2,3,5... whatever... the point remains the same- Wolverine is a HUGE character and discounting his 1st appearance because it occurs in the wrong comics era is silly.

That and Iron Man sucks

(that's another joke)
