OT: I need HELP. SERIOUS HELP!

41 posts in this topic

I was out of work when I was 21 years old. I ended up taking a door to door sales job which brought in a few bucks until I was able to get back into the automotive industry.

Sometimes you just take what you can get rather than live in the street.

You got that right! Among my many, many jobs are carnival worker (one long weekend when they were set up for a two week stint in town), desk clerk at a hot sheets motel ( :o ), and catering wait staff.

After reading some thriller novel about carnies I thought it must be the most awesome job in the world.

Amen to that. Ive take. Lots of jobs when I had to. Always waiter jobs out there. And I don't want to be a person_who_is_obnoxiously_self-impressed either but there is still unemployment in the USA Right?

I cannot get unemployment. My last job the last 3 years has been a part time thing, and i do not qualify.

I'm looking for any job right now,and can not get a waiter job or anything here in my area. I am trying, daily.

It's tough when you are 38,and competing with younger people with "experience".

I live in vrtually same area as you here in south florida. Absurdly tough market. What messes with your mind in the Boca area, next town over from you, is that there is so much wealth from retirees. I would think there is a greater concentration of millionaires within a 10 mile radius than almost anywhere else in country.

I am relatively sure you can land a position at one of the many casinos in south florida.

Have you actually applied for unemployment? Part time in FLA is allowed. At the least it would provide a little extra income while you are job searching.

Yes,and not happening. Unfortunately i was a "petty cash" person, working under the table, for my and their benefit while being "Mr Mom" raising my ex's kid. So no go.

Peace Corps? You won't make big bucks but it's an experience that can really open some doors.

I'd also recommend checking university websites as they often have a slew of staff openings--again, nothing much in terms of getting rich, but it might help pay some bills.

As a last resort, you might also check in with some temp agencies who hire out untrained workers to various job sites, which in turn, can sometimes turn into full-time job offers.

It's a tough place to be and I hope something works out for you soon!

Additionally, if you ever served in the military, there are a LOT of organizations out there looking to help Vets find work. If that applies, LMK and I can send you some links.

There will be a job service type of office, attached to your local Dept of Labor, sign up with them, even if you are not collecting Unemployment.

If you worked "under the table" as long as you reported the income, you still might be eligible for Unemployment, I'm not very familiar with Florida law, but all States go by USDOL guidelines and if you protest, they might charge the employer for the taxes and cover you. You may also be able to file an amended return if you "forgot" to report your earnings.

Good places to look for work in Florida in that area, are restaurants, they are plentiful, service jobs (as someone mentioned) are the best bet. If there are retirement communities they hire people to cut the grass, do maintenance, golf courses, etc.

You could also look into setting up your own business watching houses for Snowbirds, helping with general chores. There are local chapters of the Small Business Development Corp (although they may go by a different name there) and SCORE, the Service Corp of Retired Executives, all over the Country and they love to provide free guidance.

Wishing you the best of luck!

Are there no government programs that retrain you into specific fields (like a skilled trade position) and find you a position then subsidise your salary. That way you win, the company wins and the it doesn't cost the government a fortune. Program like this exist in Ontario... not sure how it is in the US.

Ultimately stay positive and don't let your emotions show in an interview.

I am a recruiter (headhunter) and know a thing or two about interviewing.

PM me if I can be of assistance... in fact I'm going to send you a PM to email me your resume so I can "Tweak" it a bit and possibly show it to some of my clients in Southern USA. It would be a factory job but its a start. :wishluck:

As soon as I read that, it made me think of Alastair Sim.

I think a solid bet would be to get out of Florida. Go to the midwest where the cost of living is lower. Jobs are more abundant.

Just a thought, have you considered applying to Publix and getting in their management trainee program? You are in FLA, right? I would imagine good bennies, plenty of opportunity, and a solid future with no layoffs. people always buy food no matter the economy.

Plus the pay can't be bad. Go back to 1990, I was offered $19,000/year from a local grocer (Wegmans) to enter such program. At that time, it was roughly 18-20,000 starting salary for most business majors with a BS. Very competitive. Store managers were making upwards of $75,000 back then. I am not inflating, that was a known number.

That is excellent advice...Publix is a rock-solid company that treats employees (and customers) well. They always seem to be hiring...forget that you are 38, if you are smart and can sell yourself as willing to do anything (bag boy, stocker, cashier) to start, I'm betting you can find a job. Most of their entry-level jobs are filled with highschool and college students who are always moving on so turnover is high and opportunities abound. And I have heard from many that they ALWAYS look to promote from within once you get your foot in the door. Good luck!

If that doesn't work out I have some friends at the Ft.Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel newspaper..not too far from you, and they may have some openings from packaging/operations to part-time sales. If you are well-spoken, work hard and learn quickly, they might be able to use you. I work at their sister paper up here in Orlando and can put you in touch with some hiring managers if you're interested.
