Well boys and girls, I got the results of the left side biopsy about an hour ago. And as the doctor just said, "I have good news and I also have not-so-good news."

 

As I've stated before, there were a couple of large nodules in the left side of my thyroid gland which was removed on Monday. Ends up they were benign.

 

Now the not-so-good news. They did find 3 seperate areas of papillary thyroid cancer (the most common form of thyroid cancer) in the left lobe of my thyroid gland. But it's still not known whether the right side of my thyroid gland still has to come out or not. According to my doctor, there are differing opinions on whether to remove all of the thyroid gland if small areas of the cancer are found. He said it really depends on whether these 3 seperate areas are closely bunched or not. If they're far enough apart, I should need no further surgery. But if they are close together, that's bad and I'll probably need the right side of my thyroid gland removed as well.

 

I should know more after further consultation between the doctors and the pathologist....hopefully by next Monday or Tuesday. I'll let you guys know more when I find out. (thumbs u

UPDATE -I received a call from the doctor about an hour ago. After further consultation, the doctors are in agreement that the right side of my thyroid gland should come out as well. They don't believe the cancer spread to that side, but feel that it should come out just to make sure (and we completely agree). Once the whole thyroid gland is out, they'll check the nearby lymph nodes again but they think they're OK. So once the whole thyroid gland is out, I shouldn't have to worry about any reoccurrence of the cancer and should need no chemo or radiation treatment either.

 

The 2nd surgery is tentatively scheduled for the week of May 7-11. I'm not sure how that's going to affect my overall hospital bill, but I'm going to go ahead and start Shark's Surgery Sale #3 soon. It will be all raw books and I'll try to list those books which were asked for previously in this thread (Journey Into Mystery, Tales of Suspense, Byrne X-men, etc.). Let me know if there's anything else you want to see listed.

 

If I'm lucky, I will have healed sufficiently enough and have a little extra money so I can make the trip to the Dallas Comicon on May 19-20.

Just wanted to wish you all the best for a speedy and full recovery from your current and upcoming surgery. Iv been battling cancer myself for 15 years and just found out yesterday I'm back on 6mths of chemo starting soon. Really glad to hear that you'll be able to avoid that and hope you make that Dallas con! Sounds like you've got a great attitude to your situation and that's something to be extremely proud and inspired by. All the best mate

8 days after the 1st surgery. Still swollen but the incision sight is healing nicely. It's just too bad that they'll be cutting me open again along that same line when I have the 2nd surgery in a couple of weeks.
