Hepcat Posted October 1, 2013 Share Posted October 1, 2013 Given that it's been the buying power of baby boomers entering their peak earning years that has pushed the price of "key" comics to astronomical levels, these prices are going to be difficult to maintain as more and more boomers enter their retirement years, and then slowly fade into the sunset. Quite simply, who's going to be buying from the boomers and their estates as they liquidate? This scenario of course applies to not just Brave and the Bold 28, but whichever comics and other boomer artifacts that have appreciated most strongly in price in the last 25 years. Superman: Larry David To Play Mr. Mxyzptlk? Chalk this one up as one of the most outrageous rumors out there about the upcoming Batman Vs. Superman movie. According to a report on Radar Online, Larry David could be in the running to play Superman villain Mr. Mxyzptlk. According to one of the site’s insiders, Ben Affleck is actually pushing for his pal and neighbor Larry David to make an appearance in the Batman Vs. Superman movie. The unnamed insider is quoted as saying, “The pair chatted about the idea with earnest abandon throughout the course of Emmy weekend. Larry has long been courted by the big budget superhero industrial complex, being linked to roles in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man sequels nearly a decade ago.” The unnamed insider added, “But Ben is somebody he trusts and enjoys spending time with and this could be the right situation for Larry to finally appear in a huge-grossing hit film. Fun speculation that it could be for the famed Superman enemy role of Mr. Myxlplyx (sic) could make this piece more exciting, since Larry is a dead ringer for the character.” Yes, Mr. Mxyzptlk is actually misspelled in the original report, but it is one of Superman’s more challenging villain names. According to Radar Online, the mysterious insider thinks that Affleck will get his way and David will be in the movie. He also thinks Affleck will get a producer credit on the movie. Larry David was the head writer and executive producer of Seinfeld, and he created the HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm. So how much credibility should this report be given? Well, if they were ever going to put Mr. Mxyzptlk in a Superman movie, we think Larry David would be a fine choice. But the idea of Mr. Mxyzptlk in a Superman movie at this point is kind of crazy within itself. If Affleck and David were actually having this discussion, then we would lean to think that they were making a big joke, and someone took it seriously. I hear ya, but with great risk sometimes comes great reward....that's no consolation if you're on the losing end of that argument however....but I've done rather well with some raws in the 4 digit range...even on the bay. And with regards to Gator's comment: yep....that's alot of duckets for a straight up 4.0 if you'd call it that. If it ends up being in the VG/F range however they may have saved a couple sheckles.... I see it a bit differently. I can see your point. But I think another trend will more than counter this. The 'nerd' and comics 'life styles' are becoming more and more main stream. Look at the large comic cons. These are driven by young people and they are growing every year. We are even seeing them start to pop up abroad. Many of these young people have the immidiate interest in comics which means many of them will buy comics when they can afford it as they get older. Many of the most successful youtube channels are interested in comics and go to comic cons (eg Kassem G etc.). They have millions of viewers. I honestly see the whole comics scene going from a little group of people to becoming more and more main stream and I think the price increases we have seen are partly due to this trend. When is Hollywood going to stop cramming down our throats? One look at the trailer for Runner Runner and I knew it would stink to high heaven. Why can't executives paid gazillions of dollars to manufacture this drek see that before they put out something so horrible it defies description? I'm no nostradamus, but I betcha dimes to donuts that "Gone Girl" will be yet another catastrophic notch in Affleck's movie belt. When folks say "Affleck has grown since his earlier roles". He won awards for Argo, yada, yada, yada. Well I guess they can't all be winners now, but his track record is redunkulous at best. He better shape up before Batman vs. Superman. I could see your point about most comics that were bought by boomers will fade, but comics like Avengers,X-Men, Spider-Man and Batman won`t fade because they are collected by people of all ages and not just baby boomers! An example is Gene Autry,Hopalong Cassidy and Roy Rogers comics which were heavily bought by baby boomers support your argument, but Superman, Batman, the Avengers, Iron Man, and Spider-man don`t support your argument. With Disney and Warner now marketing their characters in other multi-media empires I can`t see Batman or the Avengers ever fading. I can see obscure horror, funny animals, war and western comics bought by boomers fading. They will keep making Batman and Marvel superhero movies, but nobody is going to make new movies about obscure Charlton titles. Superman, Batman, Spiderman, etc. will live long on way after there's a pile of dirt marking the spot I lay. I've got no concerns about who's going to buy comics from baby boomers...there'll always be someone interested. The kids of today growing up watching these new incarnations in whatever form....some of them will invariably collect. With the comics only getting older and the prices already firmly established for some keys....I see appreciation and increased value for sure.
