But today at a local show I found it at a different dealers booth with the original price tag of $300. The guy said he could work with me and offered it for $150 ( I went to his booth because a friend said it was offered to him for $150 but passed) so I asked to take the book out, he did and once I opened the book (cover detached and 90% split) he said $125, so I finished counting pages and made a lower offer and he took it. Ive always liked the cover but this title seems like its always going up. He also told me that it was a L.B.Cole cover? It looks nothing like a Cole cover to me. I did pass on a book that has peaked my interest. Its Whiz Comics 154. Theres 20 blue CGC, none on or finished on ebay and OSPG says "Scarce"? and its first Doctor Death in this title and has hanging panels. Thats all I know. I know the dealer so I can still get the book. My question is since Im a PCH fan like most here should it be in my collection, is it really a "scarce" book? Why would you want to own it? As previously stated, that is NOT an L.B. Cole cover. He drew -I think exclusively- for his Star Publications. AFA should you get the Whiz Comics issue, it's strictly a personal decision. You don't have to conform to any standard as a PCH collector. I have some unrelated to horror books just for the cover, some just for one story, etc. If it peaked your interest, then maybe "scratch the itch", LOL! Ive been taking to a friend about it and he said the same thing and gave me some prices on the book (whiz 154) plus I called the owner of the book and he will bring it to next weeks show and said he'd honor his offer price if it doesn't sell in his store by then. I guess I didn't know anything about it and was curious as to what the story around it was if anything. Thanks Edited December 4, 2022 by Raze
Ryan.
What was the grade and price on the Whiz 154? A NM for $17? Go get it. A Poor for $17,000? Pass. Raze

For comparison I've included a 1.5 up now on ebay in the spoiler box. Mine is way better I think. Low grade for sure, but I wanted a copy for now, as this book is getting silly price-wise. Not too bad for the grade, and it's by Joe Maneely, total legend in comic book land. Somebody please explain something to me: This comic is graded 1.0, almost at the bottom of the ladder. Why would you keep it in the slab? How much damage could you possibly do to it by READING it?? What is the point of keeping a book in lousy condition in a slab? It's already trashed! Seriously, why?

Why would you keep it in the slab? How much damage could you possibly do to it by READING it?? What is the point of keeping a book in lousy condition in a slab? It's already trashed! Seriously, why? I can think of a few different reasons, actually. CGC certification/encapsulation generally makes for a quicker sale, often at a greater price (as a result of prospective buyers having more confidence that the book is free of restoration and accurately graded). I personally would be comfortable purchasing this copy as a raw FAIR, but I'm certain there are other prospective buyers out there who would regard that grade as too high. In many cases, the difference in market value between 1.0 FR and 0.5 PR is about the same as a premium six-pack. In the case of an Astonishing #30, that difference is around $250. Chicken feed for some, but a significant chunk of change for others. You've already gone on record with your belief that certification/encapsulation of comics makes no sense. Gotcha -- I'm certain others share your opinion. However, I'd encourage you to avoid allowing that negativity to color every contribution you make here. Offered with only good intentions. For what it's worth, I think the subject book presents extremely well. If that book was in a Mylar sleeve, and I was required to estimate its grade based solely on its front cover, I'd probably call it a 2.5 GD+. This book has all the blemishes/defects normally associated with "moisture damage" (cockling/rippling/warping. ink loss, tidelines, rusty staples, rust staining, a detached cover, mildew, etc). But it is definitely not trashed. That is all. sagii, Treco, Dr. Balls and 8 others 9
