Fantastic Comics 3

200 posts in this topic

Fantastic #3 is one of those 'ones that got away' that will bug me forever. I was collecting the early Fantastic run circa 2002-2006 or so, and passed up more than one shot at an affordable filler copy. Dumb! I just had no idea how nutty the prices would get over time.

#3 understandably gets the heat for the cool cover, but I love the surrounding issues as well. I have Fantastic #1, 2 and 4-12. Some really wild covers and stories with classic early-GA-style art, and Fletcher Hanks' Stardust is a demented highlight of every issue.

mine has the same spine split; i think it may be common among copies of this book.

Really nice Billy (I saw that in person too when Peets had it - sun shading on back cover?), and that's (same small spine split) just what I thought of in comparison to the Central Valley copy.

I know where the Central Valley copy has been residing.

Ben what's the grade on that one? White pages I'm assuming ?

5.5 and yea white pages.

I remember Brian Peets showing me that copy at a Wonder Con several years ago. Beautiful book, brought down in grade by a spine split.

Me too, Andy (though it was raw at SDCC quite some time ago).

I was tempted despite the price tag (which I do recall). The spine split was neat and not visible in the slab. Book looked high grade.

I considered it. I was wondering how much restoration it would take to make the copy look presentable...

I had one in similar condition, although it had corner missing, and it ran close to $2k. This one doesn't need any pieces added, just a good cleaning and spine reinforcement, so maybe $1k?

What level of restoration (I assume extensive rather than moderate), and what was the apparent grade in the end?

Sorry, just saw this! Moderate to extensive. Not sure of the final grade, but the eye appeal is in the 9.0 range.

Sounds like a result. :applause:

Kenny did a nice job on it. The book has since moved on to one of the many other Andys on the board.

The Central Valley Fantastic 3 is a 6.0 with the eye appeal of a 9.4, not or never was a 5.5 as primetime so loudly alluded to.

It might be a 6.0 now, but it absolutely was a 5.5. Here's a Central Valley price list from A-1 Comics...

Does anyone know why there were two different ads in the interior front cover of Fantastic 3? Two printings?

Great catch. I would assume that the House ad version would have come first, and they stopped the presses to ad a paying ad to up the revenue.

Ad copy has deadlines like everything else. This makes sense if there was a slip-up, but I bet the advertiser was none too happy.

I wonder how often this actually occurred in GA comics. hm

I like that cover but find the price of a low grade copy is amazing...and the story pictured on the cover is actually in Fantastic 4.

If an advertising mix-up PO'd Daisy, it might explain why that house ad is repeated in the next issue. lol

That makes me curious as to whether the advertising is the same on the inside BC of two differing examples of #3. hm
