But in the meantime, at least you have a filler copy. In the case of the rare GA I like, sometimes you only get one chance… Ricksneatstuff

Popular Post Darwination
Alright, so an attempt to clear up some attribution for some St. John Romance covers, and this seems like the place to do it, as I don't know of any place with more romance comics fans than right here. @Yorick had asked me a while back about a cover artist ID for Teen-Age Romances #30 from March of 1953 GCD attributes the cover (correctly) to "Dawson" If you blow it up, you get a better view of where she signed to the left of the blonde's shoulder I sort of filed the subject away until I was indexing St. John's Reader' Choice Library of paperbacks last night which ran from 1950-1952. Grant Thiessen's paperback index that he's working on had a few in the line attributed to Isabel Dawson, and I've identified one more in the series that should be. In fact, I think it's either an overpaint or using the same photo source as TAR #30 Reader's Choice Library 30 Scandalous Loves - N.P. Nezelof (1951) cover Isabel Dawson others in the series from Dawson Reader's Choice Library 21 Don't Wait for Love - Maysie Greig (1950) cover Isabel Dawson Reader's Choice Library 23 Veiled Murder - Alice Campbell (n.d.) cover Isabel Dawson Reader's Choice Library 25 Bonanza Queen - Zola Ross (1951) cover Isabel Dawson Because of the striking similarity in signature (but vaguer similarity in style) to Willard Downes, I thought they might be the same person, but I've veered away from that. Does anybody know anything about Isabel Dawson? Pulp covers has another four here: https://pulpcovers.com/tag/isabeldawson/ and there's also this one she's credited with: I'm coming up pretty dry in terms of actual biographical info for Isabel outside of an address on the back of the OA for Trailer Camp Girl that Grapefruit Moon has up in their virtual gallery I'm a horrible sleuth when it comes to biographical info but wonder if anybody else can dig up some facts or has heard of her time at St. John? In any case, I wonder if we can't get Teen-Age Romances #30 solidly ascribed to Isabel Dawson at the GCD instead of just Dawson. I also think the other paintings in the run are hers, as they seem a similar style and line-up time-wise with her tenure with the company. I almost posed the subject over on the Baker thread since Baker peoples seem to have a good knowledge of St. John from Art of Glamour (which I haven't read closely) or Confessions, Romances, Secrets and Temptations - Archer St. John and the St. John Romance Comics (which I have read closely but don't remember mention of Isabel Dawson), but I opted to do it here. Another couple of possible paintings by Isabel for Cinderella Love(the first seems to fit more than the second): And on Romantic Marriage, a couple of other candidates, the first seems more certain than the other two: The best image I have, Crippen D from HA *shudder* (somebody show me a nice copy if they have one, please) Anyways, a strong candidate for a number of these covers and if anything a first name should get added to the GCD credits for the signed cover. Will ping Lowell from the paperbacks, just in case he knows something about Ms. Isabel and see if he'll slum it over in these funny books and share his pb insights @Surfing Alien and how about one more St. John ID for the GCD for good measure I hit as I was looking through the painted St. John covers. This is Victor Olson: This STUNNER sold at Heritage in 2016 for $1,000 (and I did a little touch up to the painting which had stains on it when I appropriated it for a scanner tag), clear signature match: Olson's most famous pb cover is likely for Cornell Woolrich's Waltz into Darkness sold in 2016 for $1,375. I need to get some paperback art, holy cow. Edited July 21 by Darwination Inaflash, PeterPark, Microbia and 9 others 10
Yorick
TAR26 was always throwing me off from the other TAR painted covers (27-30), but now I'm looking at the backgrounds on 28 and 29 and seeing the loose work there... It has to be her on all of those. Plus they're mostly all signed. It's pretty clear (now) that the Dawson signature is quite different from Downes signature (with the big flared "D" and "E" - Flying Eagle Manhunt covers). I love your analysis, @Darwination. Great presentation! Edited July 21 by Yorick sp Darwination
Darwination
You're absolutely right that some are signed, I wasn't looking closely enough. So they're 100% Dawson 28, to the right of her glove: 29, at the bottom of her book Am I missing any actual signatures on any of the others? In my mind a least, all of those TAR are confirmed (as well as the Romantic Marriage 18).
Darwination
We're hot in here. Picked up one more. Cinderella Love #13, no attribution at the GCD, NOT Dawson but Rudolph Nappi (wow!). Sig close-up I recently worked with one of his digest covers Over in the paperback thread, peeps were oohing and aahing an considering extra mortgages on their house when Reefer Girl sold last year (36 grand) This St. John isn't his only appearance in the comics, as he did some ECs, too. Robot Man
I spoke to several big dealers at Torpedo about the current market. Was no suprise that big SA/BA is down but what was selling well. Of course PCH, Schomburg, LB Cole and Baker but noticeably Romance is on fire. I suspect folks have finally “discovered” them in the last couple years. Although, I have a good amount of them, they have never been a big focus for me. I think these boards have been a good reason. If you asked me even 5-6 years ago, I would (other than Baker), would have scoffed at you. Nice romance books at Torpedo were pretty nose bleed prices.
