Lordy Hap! That is a big one indeed. Congrats on a complete EC collection. A rare and tough goal to finish off!

Gotta ask, what are the contents?

It’s not super rare compared to most “rare” books, but comparing notes among Mad collectors there’s little doubt it’s the hardest to find of the comic book issues.

We don't really know if #5 actually had low distribution, or just that #4 sold really well, and #5 sold less. There is no doubt that the distributor was peeved about #5 -- Gaines had to actually print a formal apology (reprinted in a later issue of Squa Tront). But he would have mainly punished himself financially by withholding copies from sale.

I’m not as picky about miscuts as I used to be, especially in harder to find in nice shape GA (although 5 doesn’t seem rare despite the low distribution) but this one’s close to the limit.

Anyway, love how much is going on on the cover without it looking too busy.  Above and beyond my favorite Mad cover, hope to pick up a nicer copy some day, and since the value hasn’t changed in about 20 years, and the presence of the Gaines copies suppresses the high grade prices a bit, who knows … might land a prettier one some day.

It's a great cover indeed, by Elder -- hope you don't take my miscut comment as a slam on your book, it's perfectly acceptable. I have a few books similar, nature of the GA beast. It would take a pretty severe miscut to turn me away. As to fave early MAD cover, mine is #2 by Mr. Davis. :-)

So can we officially say now that TOT #1 is the rarest, most desirable of all commercially sold ECs?

I’ll stipulate that it’s the rarest, but if “most desirable” equals most demand, I think there are some contenders.

Well said.  Rebound books with variable contents tend to be a very specialist niche item.  I'll even grant that the EC annuals are the most generally in demand within that category, other than some of the Matt Baker covers.  But it's still on too few people's radar to really get flagged as the most desirable EC over, say, CSS 22.

None of the above should be taken as me saying the TOT annual is anything other than an awesome book!

I thought it'd be helpful to do a quick comparison of some of the most desirous ECs on the GCG Census as of 12/27/2022, and the relative number of slabbed copies.

TOT #1 - 29

TOT #2 - 50

TOT #3 -  103

War Against Crime #10 - 48

Crime Patrol #15 - 76

Crypt of Terror #17 - 84

Vault of Horror #12/1 - 88

Haunt of Fear #15/1 - 85

CSS #22 - 378

Weird Science #12/1 - 79

Weird Fantasy #13/1 - 105

SSS #6 - 293

Mad #1 - 548

Weird Science-Fantasy #29 - 269

Shock Illustrated  #3 - 22

Thus, as far as the comics go, TOT #1 is far and away the scarcest of the desirous slabbed New Trend ECs. Only Shock Illustrated #3 undercuts it, but Picto-Fiction is a lot less desirous than the comics.

Absolutely! Tales of Terror annual 1 is an Apex predator. I’ve owned Vault 12 and Crime Patrol 15, but I never even considered the possibility of owning TOT1. That is not a book to be owned by the likes of me.
