Suicide Squad movie coming

Agree, third act not so good, which is something it has in common with a lot of even good superhero movies.

But what is interesting when comparing to the average superhero movie is females are the ones rating this film higher. IMDb viewers are giving this a 6.9/10.0, but when you check the high scores across the different age groups and genders the differences are reversed.

Is the Harley character much more appreciated by females over males?

Yes, particularly young millenials. For some reason, they think a "smart", used and abused by the Joker, bat-poop crazy female is somehow and empowering figure.

Wait - what??!! You didn't like this movie?

DEADLINE: Thursday Box Office Update

The naughty toon (Sausage Party) is looking to tip $20MM in the face of Warner Bros.’ August behemoth Suicide Squad which is looking at $51MM-$54MM. With a film like Sausage Party, late night showtimes are lucrative.

Last night among the regular films in play, Suicide Squad was the top title drawing $8.2MM and raising its first week’s cume to $179.1MM.

Yeah, so yesterday's take was $1.7 million ahead of Batman v. Superman's first Wednesday, and $1.2 million ahead of Deadpool's.

Given how hard it fell (percentage-wise) in its first three days, I think this is the "teenagers out of school" differential, rather than any indicator of long-term legs.

Maybe...But...

It's also an August movie, the biggest August start ever, not the March blockbuster opening weekend of BVS. It's doing this in a month that only GOTG had ever really conquered as a massive opening. It's almost doubled the #3 August opening ever. Blockbusters just don't happen in August.

And it has $75 million less budget than BVS.

This movie is a winning hit already. Why are we as comic fans surprised that Harley Quinn and Deadpool have the two biggest breakout movies of the year?

A whole generation of younger people have grown up reading stuff like Deathnote and playing games like Arkham Asylum - they don't want Batman Adventures. They want sick, crude, demented violence and perverse humor. I can't even imagine what's next.

If that's the case, they would have walked away disappointed from Suicide Squad

My chief criticism about the movie was that it was boring - it started out fine, but quickly devolved into a cookie-cutter save-the-world plot with a c-level villain.

It's going to be boring to any of us who actually read, or want something more... heck, most of all of these superhero movies are pretty vapid... But so much of this younger generation is satisfied with the lame storylines used in video games, that the movie will seem cool just because it looks the part. A new young society hypnotized by their smart phones and computers, who only need the illusion to give approval. Heck, Deadpool was a star even before his movie, from people who only knew him from pictures on the internet and who had never read the comic.

It's a different audience.

My teenage daughter loved Deadpool - as in it's probably her favorite superhero movie of all time. She thought SS was boring as well

Then she is not the norm for the female audience when looking at the IMDb ratings.

I suspect Suicide Squad will make more domestically than Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captain America even when they are adjusted for inflation. In the first week alone it might pass all 3.

How's that for a prediction! Tomorrow, the first day of week 2, it will have passed Thor ($181M), Ant Man ($180M), Captain America: The First Avenger ($172M), and Incredible Hulk ($134M) domestically. By the end of this weekend it will have passed Thor: The Dark World ($206M) and be well on it's way to passing Captain America: Winter Soldier ($260M) domestically too.

I'm not convinced it will be able to pass Iron Man 2, but I think it will come pretty close. And I'm pretty sure Guardians of the Galaxy is out of reach because I don't see too many parents bringing the little ones to this movie.

FORBES.COM Box Office: 'Suicide Squad' Ends First Week With $179.1M In Cumulative Earnings

Suicide Squad ended its first week of domestic play with a whopping $179.1 million seven-day cume. The Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc. offering earned another $8.2m on Thursday, down just 16.3% from its $9.8m Wednesday total. Comparatively speaking, Guardians of the Galaxy dropped 13.6% on its first Thursday ($7.6m), Batman v Superman fell just 4.4% on its first Thursday ($7.7m), Man of Steel fell 22% ($7.1m), and Captain America: Civil War fell 9.1% ($8.1m).

Said films had seven-day totals of (respectively) $134 million, $209m, $168m, and $223m. By the by, those four films earned a little less in their first four weekdays than Suicide Squad‘s $45m Mon-Thurs total. Man of Steel and Guardians earned $40m, Batman v Superman earned $43m, and Cap 3 nabbed $43.9m in their respective first four weekdays.

We can expect a second-weekend gross of between $47 million and $60m, with around $55m (-58%) seeming like a safe bet for an over/under $235m ten-day cume. That (speculative guestimation) will put it past every X-Men movie save for Deadpool and 21st on the list of comic book superhero/superhero movies (including The Matrix Reloaded) and well on its way to topping a whole bunch of DC/Marvel movies. Or it might crash like Dawn of Justice and pull in a $42m weekend. We’ll know when we know.

Another Forbes.com article on the current SS box office and results needed to break even.

FORBES.COM: 'Suicide Squad' Dominates Despite Media's Gloom And Doom

If second weekend domestic predictions pan out, Suicide Squad will pass $465 million worldwide by close of business Sunday. Should the Wednesday and Thursday foreign totals wind up on the higher end of estimates, and should it hold better overseas due to its opening in additional markets, then the film could hypothetically end its sophomore weekend with something closer to $470-475 million in global receipts. Low-end, it will top $450 million, high-end should include a plausible shot at the $480 million range if all the stars align in its favor.

The long-term prospects point to Suicide Squad passing $600 million with no trouble. Average holds would push it to anywhere between $620-650 million worldwide. Better than average declines and a few more record-setting days could get it to $700 million. I’m betting the final tally falls somewhere between $650 million and $700 million, but I’ll revise that estimate after I see this weekend’s actuals and how it holds during the weekdays immediately afterward. If it surpasses predictions and takes $60 million domestic plus north of that number abroad, and if next week’s daily figures show a decline of less than 50% from the previous week, then it will look headed toward the higher end of estimates for sure.

How does this stack up against the film’s costs? Well, first of all I can tell you that these $800 million “break-even point” claims floating around are false. The film needs to do about $600 million in global ticket sales to cover the shooting budget (including reshoots) plus marketing costs, since the studio will only get about half of the box office receipts to cover the combined costs that total roughly $300 million. Claims in the press of marketing exceeding $150-200 million are gross exaggerations, as are rumors of costly reshoots that pushed the filming budget closer toward the $200 million range.

And yet even if it experiences the high-end of a decline, it still breaks $400 MM worldwide by its second weekend. Pretty shocking for a movie that was 'destroyed' by the critics.

The Hollywood Reporter: Weekend Update

However, holdover Suicide Squad should easily win the weekend overall, although everyone will be watching to see how much it declines from its August-best $133.7 million opening last weekend. According to first projections, the Warner Bros. and DC title could earn anywhere from $41 million to $48 million in its sophomore outing, a 64 percent to 69 percent decline. Globally, the anti-superhero film should easily cross the $400 million mark over the weekend.
