But what I have seen all throughout this weekend is a lot of posts and a lot of positive vibe coming from communities of color who have been very excited for this movie. I know I mentioned it yesterday but folks, I truly suspect that Marvel hit a home run with this movie in that regard. The buzz online around this movie is insane, and as was said earlier, among black females as much as males. I just received a txt from a friend of mine who sent me a picture of hers dressed in traditional African grab which she wore for that movie. Many others have done the same. This is an AMAZING thing for our hobby. It brings people who have never held a comic in their lives and that somehow with that movie found an inspiration. Great cast, lots of energy and action as well as what I felt was one of the better stories for a solo Marvel movie. Will see it again soon. I saw BP in non-3D format as I have a problem viewing 3D movies. Michael B. Jordan surprised me with his strong performance as the main villian but Klau was also strongly acted. Solid world building with the history, African traditions and tech of Wakanda vs current world politics. I don't think Marvel Studios could have made BP any better. The movie had a few moments that require suspension of belief, but that is pretty much a prerequisite of any superhero movie. The thing that surprised me (but in retrospect probably shouldn't have) was the inspiration from Africa itself. I'm not going to proceed in spoilers as I won't revel any movie points but I do want to add my impression on the attention to detail the movie producers and/or director made. I spent time in Kenya doing mission work and the 'street' scenes of the Wakandan city felt similar to the markets in Nairobi. The beadwork on the costumes and dances were similar to those found in certain African tribes and the dances (especially bobbing the neck) was similar to those found in the Samburu tribe... I even recognized a couple of Samburu words and I suspect they used other regional languages as well. One interesting note was that the different tribes of Wakanda were broad representations of some of the tribes in Africa (eg. the lip plates are used by several tribes, the long neck/rings around the neck are used by several tribes, the vibrant colors of cloth are for ceremonial dress and certain colors have a distinct representation for many tribes as well as the patterns on clothing, etc.). I suspect this was done since A) Wakanda is a fictional country and B) Africa is a large continent and it would be difficult to have one style without giving away exactly 'where' Wakanda 'is'; in other words - Wakanda is an amalgamation of the whole continent. As far as a larger social meaning of the movie (and also from a personal perspective), my wife is African American and my kids are mixed; they have been very, very excited about seeing a major super hero movie that represents 'them'. My wife in particular was ecstatic that black women are well represented (and dark skin black women vs. light skin black women in particular... and I know is a touchy subject for some people of color so I'm not trying to stir anything up). Afterward she said there were several scenes that were symbolic about ideas of black beauty (such as the scene of Dani throwing her wig off). I think this movie does have the potential to bring a larger audience to the superhero film genre. Hopefully Marvel (and DC) can continue to produce movies that cross (or transcend!) race and gender to increase their audience. I think Black Panther and Wonder Woman are two great examples on how to do that. I really enjoyed it Not sure if it deserves 97 percent. However, I really liked it. I do find it funny that he's a King of a nation PLUS a superhero... like he has enough time to be a superhero in addition to ruling a whole country... meanwhile, ol Peter parker seems plain lazy- balancing his "everyday" life with crimefighting...
