Uh-oh. Studio tampering.

A new report from Collider provided an explanation for these delays, and while they are somewhat expected and reasonable for the X-Men movie, The New Mutants is in a much different and more interesting situation.

This was to be the first year that Fox would put out three X-Men based movies in the same 12-month span, starting with The New Mutants. That movie was pushed back initially after the success of Stephen King's It and other horror movies, with the genre having a banner year in 2017. Executives sought to make the film scarier, despite the movie testing well with audiences.

This comes in the wake of the success of Deadpool and Logan, which offered different flavors in the superhero genre, while the X-Men movies remained the flagship with a more familiar take on the franchise. The report from Collider states that director Josh Boone delivered a cut of the film he was satisfied with, but Fox execs want the movie to standout and apparently didn't think it was scary enough.

Apparently Fox is demanding substantial reshoots that could change the movie, including the possibility of reshooting unto 50 percent of footage that was already filmed. They could possibly add multiple new characters to be included throughout the film's entirety, in addition to the core cast of Magik, Mirage, Wolfsbane, Sunspot, and Cannonball.

The report also goes on to state Boone has had significant creative differences with Fox over their requests to change the film, though there has been no word on the possibility if he could be replaced as the production roles on. In the wake of the turmoil that has rocked movies like Solo: A Star Wars Story and Justice League, this might not be the best move.

Typical studio exec meddling. "One is good so 100 must be better. Don't just do it . . . Overdo it!" They'll end up taking something that was good "as is" and ruin it. You'd think they'd take a look at how that's worked out recently and have a little faith.

NOW I am getting concerned.

Quote

According to the Tracking Board, New Mutants would've introduced the character of Mr. Sinister to the X-Men movies, and the villain would've been played by none other than Mad Men star, Jon Hamm! Check out the report below:

"Meanwhile, remember the Essex Corporation that was teased at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse? Well not only was New Mutants going to feature that mysterious company, but The Tracking Board has learned that Jon Hamm was originally going to appear as Mr. Sinister in a tag at the end of New Mutants, and Boone filmed material that led up to that reveal, only for Fox to change their minds after shooting had been completed. Now it’ll be Antonio Banderas playing an unspecified villain (one who isn’t expected to be Mr. Sinister) in the New Mutants tag."

That's a massive change from what Boone and co. originally had planned, to what we're now getting. The Essex Corporation appeared in X-Men: Apocalypse's post-credits scene, when the shadowy corporation obtained a sample of Logan / Wolverine's blood, after his violent escape from the Weapon X program. That blood sample was used to then create the clone Laura / X-23, who we met in Logan's dark near-future. With that connective tissue being strewn together, fans have been waiting for Mr. Sinister to finally emerge as a new big bad in the X-Men movie franchise, and it sounds as though New Mutants would've edged us closer to that happening. And now it won't.

Oh no!

'New Mutants' Cut Warlock Because of Budget

warlock-new-mutants-1064955-640x320.jpg

Quote

The Tracking Board reports that Warlock was featured in early version of the film's -script, but the character and his abilities were deemed too expensive early on and future drafts omitted the character.

New Mutants was designed to offer audiences an all-new approach to Marvel characters, acting as more of a horror film within the world of mutants as opposed to a massive, action-packed blockbuster. This meant that Warlock had to be cut out early to keep the film within its minimalist restrictions.

Warlock wasn't the only character teased in versions of the film, with some early incarnations of the movie featuring explorations of the Essex Corporation that was referenced at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse. This led to Jon Hamm playing Mr. Sinister in a post-credits tease, only for Fox to nix this character as well.

Last winter, New Mutants director Josh Boone teased that we could expect to see Warlock in a sequel, with the film slated to be merely the first chapter in a trilogy.

Sounds like Disney may make the decision if The New Mutants goes to theaters or Hulu.

Lauren Shuler Donner On ‘Gambit’, ‘New Mutants’ Hulu Rumors & Future Of ‘X-Men’ Franchise Under Disney

Quote

In regards to the rumors of New Mutants heading to Hulu, Shuler Donner, who yielded production oversee of the project to Simon Kinberg, says that she’s “hopeful” that the teen-horror pic will receive a theatrical release. The pic is currently scheduled to hit theaters on Aug. 2. “They worked hard on it,” said Shuler Donner about the film’s production team, “I want to see it released (theatrically), I’d hate to see it thrown at Hulu.”

Whether New Mutants goes straight to Hulu or not; we’ve heard that those hard decisions will be made once Fox is completely in the Disney fold. As of right now, the pic is scheduled to be released theatrically.

From a business perspective, Disney is getting this and Dark Phoenix, as well as any other Fox movies, at essentially zero cost (other than the exorbitant acquisition price they paid for the entire entity lol ). If the product looks decent, they might want to release both to test the waters with both films as a path to darker grittier hero films. If they flop at the box office, you can blame Fox and just shorten the theatrical run. However, if they are a success, say $500M worldwide apiece (remember, the production expenditures are a sunk cost for Fox), then it is something to build on for the future.

Then again, if they are launching their own streaming service, it might not be bad to have exclusive properties at zero cost to drive viewers to it.

They are going to relaunch it regardless. I guess the only issue they have to deal with would be the investors that backed the films' development. If they go straight to Hulu then the investors get zero. Depending on who they are, and what type of covenants they had in the contracts with Fox, Disney may release it just to keep them happy.

Looks like even the actors are getting annoyed over any delays.

Maisie Williams on 'New Mutants'

Quote

Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams plays Rahne “Wolfsbane” Sinclair in the film. Speaking to Rolling Stone, she said in no uncertain terms what she thinks about the entire situation.

“Who knows when the f**k that’s gonna come out,” she says. “Hopefully this interview will make everyone hurry up a little bit!” She noted that she spoke to co-star Charlie Heaton recently and that he also had no idea what was going on with the film.

Williams’ friend and Game of Thrones co-star Sophie Turner is also a part of the X-Men movies, playing Jean Grey. They’re hoping they get to play their mutant heroes on screen together. “It would be ridiculously stupid if they didn’t do that,” Williams says.

The New Mutants attempts to blend an X-Men story with the horror genre. Drawing from the popular "Demon Bear Saga" story, the film would see the young mutants trapped in a secret facility and left to survive on their own. There were rumors that the film could debut on Hulu. Those rumors gave way to more recent reports that the film will find a home on Disney+. There is still the possibility that Disney will choose to shelf the project indefinitely.

After rumors swirled earlier this year that Josh Boone’s feature adaptation of X-Men spin-off The New Mutants was headed to Hulu, Disney indicated in its CinemaCon presentation that the delayed Fox/Marvel movie was indeed part of its 2019 release schedule. The pic has a release date of Aug. 2.

Also a Dolby Vision release slate shown at CinemaCon indicated that New Mutants was imminent.
