Marvel UK Price Variants

Morning all :)

I posted this 'mistake' here yesterday, which readers of this thread will be familiar with: Balls Up

Here's another.

In October 1978, Marvel changed their price box layout from this style...

...to this style:

Our pence copies had the alternative 'All-Colour Comics' banner to fit in, so a bit of work to paste up the new UKPV style masthead was needed.

They got it right here...

...and here:

But they sodded this numberless one right up:

I think they did it on purpose, because they couldn't believe someone could contrive such a rubbish team up.

This is the sum total of the pence copies in my collection (that I remember having and have a picture of). As absurd as it sounds, I'm actually kinda proud about having a consecutive three issue block! As you can see, I have really only focused on the pre-hero area.

AAA Journey into Mystery 63 8.0 w UK.jpgAAA Journey Into Mystery 73 UK.jpgAAA Journey into Mystery 77 UK.jpgAAA Journey into Mystery 81 7.5 w UK.jpgAAA Kid Colt Outlaw 119 UK.jpgAAA Rawhide Kid 38 UK.jpg

AAA Strange Tales 93 8.5 w UK.jpgAAA Tales of Suspense 18 4.5 ow-w UK.JPGAAA Tales of Suspense 23 5.5 c-ow UK front.jpgAAA Tales of Suspense 24 5.0 ow UK front.jpgAAA Tales of Suspense 25 UK .jpgAAA Tales to Astonish 30 5.0 c-ow UK front.jpg

I think Pence pre-hero are some of the toughest books to find in any sort of decent grade :cloud9:

I agree with you on that Kevin!!! I consider myself very lucky to have found a handful of certified high grade copies (to me 7.5 on up qualifies). I'll tell ya, even in certified mid grade (5.0-5.5ish copies), they're tough to find for sale. That might change, as I think some people have come around to the idea that they aren't inferior to cents copies. Time will tell and I'll be looking to add more to my collection for sure. (thumbsu

I have been collecting for 50 years and still havent seen even mid-grade copies of certain books.

As kids we took comics to school and swapped them, read them in bed, the bath etc,

The fact that they are a smaller print run with sketchy distribution and mostly not looked after, means its a tough ask to find decent copies.

I agree that a lot of collectors are finally coming around to realizing what they are and the scarcity of them, so now is the time to go for it, good luck in the hunt :wishluck:

Thanks Kevin! I think if there's anything playing to our favor, I think that, while they certainly HAVE become more sought after in recent years, pre-hero Marvels are SO far behind Marvel superhero books that they simply aren't on a lot of Silver Age collectors want lists. Of course the print runs WERE smaller and as you mentioned, distribution was lacking, so who knows, maybe it evens out somewhat. (shrug) It would be interesting to know print runs of both cents and pence pre-hero Marvels.

I wish this one was in a little better shape, but.... tough one to find.  Only 31 on the census.

I had a nice Pence copy of that back in the day but bought the "Uncle Stan" copy and swapped my Pence for something else to a pal.

I seen him a few years later and asked if he wanted to trade or sell it back to me but he had already sold it on

Its a nice book in any condition :)
