In the movie Fargo, the scene where the old friend lied about his dead wife-my dad said that scene was uneccessary.  I explained it was crucial.  Every good character has a weakness.  Here we see Marge Gunderson totally unfazed by murdered bodies and criminals.  Nothing fazes her-except an old friend lying.  We see her sad response to that as she is eating her burger at the drive thru place.

Oh ya

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood may be a good example of this. The plot doesn’t even develop until about 2+ hours into it but the characters drive the story and it manages to stay interesting for the most part.

never seen it but yeah that's how it works.  Theoretically you can have a good movie with character no plot but a movie with plot no character will be a dud every time.  In fact its the most common reason a movie fails-weak character.

If you think about it the plot in cobra kai is really weak-2 groups of people that dont like each other.  There's no search for the McGuffin or any real stated character goals.  And it works.

Another well scripted element of the show is how characters switch from good to bad to good to bad-that's good writing.  Common -script failing is 2 dimensional bad guys.

That's what Miyagi said.

A good ----script has conflict, character driving plot, and no uneccessary scenes.  There should not be one second of a film that does not either move the plot forward or develop character.  That's why the entire casino planet scene in star wars should have been cut.  It did neither.

Did it not establish that the galaxy's wealthiest people were selling weapons/ships to both sides of the fight?  It also demonstrated that those with the most wealth had the least amount of concern for the poor and abused (children, animals).  In other words, the whole planet showed that extreme wealth, to the point that people/aliens who would never need another thing in their life, it was still not enough to satiate their desires and they were willing to gamble in hopes of gaining even more wealth (which would not change their lives in any way).  This brings up the question... no matter whether the Empire or the Republic is in charge, will anything change?  Star Wars - when the war is over... who wins, really?  Rose and Finn made a difference for a few children and a few animals, though they brought nothing with them.  The richest in the galaxy improved... what?

That all did not move the plot forward tho.  As such it was preaching, and thus a double -script no-no.

Disagree... and since we're both just one guy watching, our answers cancel each other.

Except-I have studied screenplay structure extensively-as i said i have read pretty much every book on screenplays several times.  I am knowledgeable in this area.

But if you disagree then tellme how depicting rich people moved the star wars plot forward-I'm willing to listen.

A plot is like the engine in a car-every part should have a function moving the car forward efficiently.  Adding a flag that pops up out of the hood that says "rich people are bad" would be a poor design-especially if it used up 1/4 of the gas.  The casino scene took up about 20 minutes-minutes are gas, in a movie.

Well according to that there is no objective truth, sodium plus chlorine does not combine to make NaCl, you can just look at it differently.

That's what she said.

I appreciate you're sharing an informed opinion. Yet I still love this show, and surprised how entertaining it has been over three seasons.

I think others have had a great time as well. So why do we need to belabor the concern it is not following screenplay etiquette if it is actually bringing great entertainment and a fun story?
