that means spider man 2002 made abt 1.2 billion.

That's why these reporting sites that compare box office results to films that are over a decade old are missing the point

Even with Batman (1989) it's original $411M takes on a new meaning when reflecting on current dollars.

$925,236,685.85

Meanwhile, Columbia Pictures’ “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is still going strong, weeks after its supermassive debut. The MCU entry took in $5.15 million on Friday, heading for the box office’s runner-up slot with a $26.75 million holiday weekend total. That puts the Tom Holland vehicle on track to surpass a $700 million domestic cume before Monday — about as successful as a North American theatrical release can be, for all intents and purposes.

After this weekend, “No Way Home” will only stand behind the following in the record books of domestic box office totals:

  • “Avatar” - $760 million
  • “Avengers: Endgame” - $858 million
  • “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” - $936 million

I also wonder about things like number of available seats when you get back far enough.  The theater I saw "Star Wars" in the first half-dozen times held 1200 people and of course it was sold out every time - they could have sold 5000 seats per showing if they had them.  But how many total seats would have available for the debut of something like "The Wizard of Oz" or "Bridge on the River Kwai?"  Today, of course, they're going with a smaller number of "premium" seats with recliners and the like but charging more per seat.

And even with the International Box Office Market it was so immature not even 20 years ago when you start to look at the growth tracking reports. Which is why those early comic book films were so Domestic Market-weighted.

It wasn't until the early 2000's you started seeing a somewhat steady patter of International outweighing Domestic.

Superman over time became a diminish returns franchise. Which is why when people make it sound like Man of Steel should have been $800M and Batman v Superman was supposed to break $1B they speak from not studying the box off trends leading up to those films. WB had backed off on the worldwide releases rather quickly.

Superman4.PNG.e871451c922f89837ab7ca5c09c4b4ad.PNG

Even with Supeman Returns for all the production budget WB threw at that film, it only brought back 1.44X production budget.

I think the international numbers must not be reported for older movies. Superman 2 premiered in other European countries before it did in the USA and did big business overseas. It was also the number one film in the UK in '81, even outgrossing Raiders. I was a passionate reader of Variety in my youth. :)

Saw this for the third time last night.  This time, in IMAX.  Still a great movie, but I was underwhelmed by IMAX.  Bigger screen, yes, but the main difference I felt was in the sound system.  I actually felt the explosions.  This is my first IMAX experience and not one I feel like I need to pay extra for in the future.
