Not yet the Sweet 16.  This round will decide that.

Alas, I voted for Kinstler :sorry:

Oh, I thought there was newer round voting currently in play.

Hey Ryan, this round ends tomorrow at 10 am then we can start the Sweet 16 voting.  It looks like Tim @thunsicker posted the links to this round already.  If you have voted, it shouldn't let you vote again but if you want to make sure try them.

"Interiors are not special"?!!  DANG.  Granted, Flanagan didn't do interior comic book work, but O'Mealia's Bob Merritt and Barry O"Neill are awesome.  I guess their work is simply too rare to be known.

O'Mealia's my favorite 1930s cover artist. Action 2 blew me away the first time I saw it for sale at my LCS in 1981.  But, I've never seen this however!  Great stuff.  Totally agree and love to see something I've never seen before!  Too rare is right.

I'm signing off for the night but just thought I would tell you as of right now, we have two games that tied.  Possibly two more OTs if they remain deadlocked when this round closes tomorrow morning.

Night all and thanks for playing.  I really am enjoying seeing how this unfolds.

Folks, I hope this is okay to close voting down for the second round.  I had set the close at 10 am CST but as I have to take my mom to a doctor's appointment.  The last vote was 12 hours ago which did break the tie in the two games which were deadlocked.  So below should be all the information needed to get our ELITE 8!

SWEET 16 is SET

Lou Fine vs. Al Williamson - A battle of style and refinement.  Does does the talented member of the “Fleagle Gang” have the have the skills to clip the wings of the lauded “Black Condor” co-creator?

Bill Everett vs. Dan Zolnerowich - Heavy-hitting Zolnerowich brings a “riveting” style but is it enough bring down the “Atlas” shouldered legend?

Wally Wood vs. Reed Crandall - Can Crandall “Captain” a “Triumph” against “The Dean of Science-Fiction Artists?”

Jack Kirby vs. Carl Barks - Hard-nosed Kirby’s “shield-like” defense and “knock-out” offense look to roast some duck in a clash of diverse styles.

Alex Schomburg vs. Mac Raboy - It’s no “mystery” that Schomburg is a “marvel” as he looks to “stifle” Raboy’s “lightning” fast skills.

L.B. Cole vs. Will Eisner - “Colorful” Cole squares off against the “Wonder Man” Eisner.

Frank Frazetta vs. Russ Heath - Heath was savage in his defeat of Feldstein but he now faces the not-so “funny” “famous” legend in Frazetta.

Matt Baker vs. Hal Foster - Foster brings a “valiant” game against Baker’s smooth, well-oiled and well-proportioned play.

I'm voting Barks over Kirby.  Kirby's best work, by far, was in the SA.  His GA style isn't as appealing to me as some other Timely and DC artists, and I think his romance work was average at best.  In the 60s he hit a high peak.

Barks, on the other hand, hit a high in the GA that really no other funny animal artist was able to do - draw funny animal stories that were as compelling or more compelling than any other work at that time.  His style and storytelling was so next level that fans identified his works even though they were unsigned - which is completely remarkable.  That Barks comics are so much more collectible than run of the mill funny animals, including Donald Duck comics of the same time, is a powerful testament to his importance.

Plus, Barks' art is extraordinary.

Having said all that, you're probably right that most here will probably vote Kirby based on his association with CA 1 - which does Barks an injustice.

Baker vs. Foster is a heavyweight fight... and Kirby vs. Barks will be interesting.

Baker drew some great covers, which matters disproportionately on this site.  But, Foster's art hit a standard that Baker never equalled, despite Baker's significant improvement over the course of his career.

It's an early clash of titans...
