I realized at the time that they would be gone forever but hey, I know I actually owned them for a while. Past few years, I have seen prices climb to a point that I really just can’t enjoy blowing so much money on something that in the long run, I could live happily without. I really never want to be out of the hunt either. The journey is so much better than the destination. So, I have just adjusted my expectations. Spending $20.-$100. on a book brings me a whole lot of fun and satisfaction. I can't seem to get out of the hunt! I go somewhere with my wife or kids or friends, and if there is a comic store or thrift store or anything along these lines nearby, I just have to look and see what they have! Mrs. Voltage simply waves her hand and me and says, 'Just go look,' and I'm off for a few minutes. Sometimes I find a nice gem or an odd item I've been searching for on the backburner. At one point I had about 10000 books and I began to think what will happen if I drop dead before I can sell my collection. My kids have little interest in them and selling 10000 books can be very daunting if you don’t know anything about comics. While I am sure they could liquidate if they needed to, I am sure they would leave tons of money on the table simply because comics are not what they are interested in. I have a buddy who is in the same situation so we agreed that if one of us should die prematurely the other would sell the collection and keep 10% for his work. In the meantime over the last few years I have sold about 90% of my collection on the boards and this makes me very happy as I know they are going to people who will really enjoy and cherish the books. I have met so many great people since I joined the boards and have been lucky enough to meet many of you in person over the years. You're *bleeping" right I have enjoy your books!!! As I always have financial needs beyond my salary I tend to look at every box as a potential $150-5000. With that said, what I collect right now is some DC war and disney ducks with some random GA, stuff I don't view as great investments (the ducks have been horrible), I just like them (even though they are material I never read when I did read comics). With that said, if there's a Sgt. Rock or enemy ace movie my basement is getting renovated! Personally I have found the lack of the physical hunt has hurt me. MY main LCS closed last year, the one I went to a lot before then closed, no comic cons around here during covid ... I enjoy the hunt. Hunting on line is not the same, at all. Hunting for stuff in person is what I like best. Just the fun of combing through stacks or boxes of books and finding something is so cool! Hunting online is a different beast for sure. Seems more like a 20-sided dice roll than in-person (which I equate to more elbow grease+knowledge). tv horror and SkOw

While I understand where you're coming from, and I also recognize that I'm not in the same situation you are in, selfishly I really hope that you don't sell out, at least not yet. Or better said, if you do sell out, it's because you really do want to pass the baton and not because of the dollar signs. That is probably a weird reaction from someone who has bought so many books from you over the years and would love to buy more, but I've always enjoyed your passion for the comic book industry. I was really engaged in your talks about opening up the store too, but again I am not in your situation and I do understand not wanting to work a job everyday. A shop would be A LOT of work, but again, selfishly I hoped you would do it so I could read about it and get that vicarious thrill lol. If I can offer one piece of advice though, don't sell the ones that mean the most to you. At least not yet. I am 4 books away right now from a Superman full run from 1-423. My father bought me a late GA/early SA Superman book from a coworker when I was a kid and gave it to me for my birthday. It was my first 10 cent comic. I thought I was rich and I must have read that thing two or three dozen times. That started an obsession that has now almost become a reality. My father passed away in April, unfortunately before I could finish the run. I miss him a lot. After the funeral I went down to the basement to pull out my "precious" box and find that book. All of my high dollar raw books were still in there in Mylar, but that book was nowhere to be found. It was gone. I vaguely remember pulling it out a couple years ago to page through it, and I must have put it somewhere else or tucked it into the wrong box. I feel like I have searched everywhere and can't find it. I am hopeful it will still turn up someday, but it made me realize that I would rather keep that book over my Superman 1, or the 2 that was so tough to get, or the 14 that is my favorite cover, or any of the other ones. Whenever I look at that book I am 10 years old again under the covers reading about Superman trying to get Mr. Mxyzptlk to say his name backwards. Those books are the ones that you will miss when they are gone. Those books might be worth thousands or belong in a dollar box, but those would be the last ones I recommend you part with. Whatever you decide to do though, thanks for being a big part in helping me get back into collecting comics. My mom went to a conference out of town one time (I was maybe 10 years old), and when she came back she gave me a wrapped present. Inside were 5 Ditko Spideys. I couldn't believe she'd actually gone into a comic store without me dragging her! I still have those books, and they'll be among the last to go. namisgr, Readcomix, ADAMANTIUM and 4 others

I also wanted to thank shadroch for having the need, the desire, and the courage to share very honest sides to get this whole thing going. For me, what this has shown, is the simple fact that I’m not alone. And I appreciate that. It doesn’t solve my own issues, or struggles with what I’m left with when it comes to my collecting needs. And let me tell you, they are needs... which is sad in a way. But the simple understanding that, maybe that’s just how it goes? Nothing lasts forever. I get excited and feel alive with the hobby, on my endless crusade for my books, wondering which gems I’ll uncover. Hoping to find the ultimate discovery, the link in the chain. Then, one day it changes. I don’t feel the same appreciation for my collection as I did when I was collecting them, and I’m left wondering what to do next... So I sell them. I sell almost all of them. Either out of frustration or aggravation with the hobby, the market, or myself... all 3 really. I realize that in truth, the only one that will ever truly appreciate what I have is me. That makes me sad. My hunger came back. But it’s tempered. It’s tempered by the harsh reality that I also have no one else to share this joy with. It’s tempered by the fact that I don’t want to feel how I felt when I lost that luster for my collection. This is a thread I can see my revisiting time and time again. I’ll reread what you have all wrote to remind myself of why I do what I do. I do this for me. And there is nothing wrong with that! Popular Post Beige
Maybe I have things set up differently, I dunno. I enjoy finding collections of things to sell, be they comics, TPB's, Heavy Metal or even Playboys. This is my hobby. I hunt for the fun of it. I (wierdly) enjoy the listing and selling of these items and learning about what i have bought. So here's the difference - I only buy comics out of the profit. So a comic costs me $0. It costs time, but again - this is my hobby. I have a small collection - less than 60 books - some I sold to finance not working whilst my wife went through cancer treatment and the aftermath of a stroke (some of you probably remember me being quite a pain on here - now you know why) - and home adjustments. But besides time, these cost me nothing. My wife is better (as she will get) so I'm back at work, and back at my hobby. This hobby has got me stuff like AF #15, Tec #36, #38, #58, #66 and DD #1 for example - for the cost of my time, time which I have enjoyed. I read mostly moderns, and have a few slabbed because I like them, not for $$ But the rest - purely bought as they are 'blue-chip' books. If the market crashes - then I lose $0 If not, upon retirement, I'll probably sell and ensure I top up our pension funds. I'm mid-fifties so another 15 yrs of working until I want to retire (67 here, but will go up to 70 soon, I'm sure) - and whilst I enjoy "The Hunt" - I'll still search, buy, sell and then use the profit to add to my collection. I totally understand the worry of having thousands of books - most of which are financially worthless, but emotionally very dear to you - so if you feel that way - downsize, sell and move on. Life is short My wife had a stroke in her early 40's and has been battling cancer for 14 years - we know how short it can be, so make the most of it. Life is not a dress rehearsal.
