That's what I first thought when I saw you say "hands."  But kind of too extreme.  Then considered the appropriateness of 'eye plucking' since his motive might have been to read the stolen loot, still in the spirit of old timey punishments.  And then I looked for the list of stolen comic books, but they only listed a few (same titles as the pic showed, in an earlier article) and it struck me a lot of the 5000 comics are probably drek.
