It being the internet, with literally a "world wide" selection of people and personalities, you're bound to get differing  temperaments, differing tolerance levels, differing ways to argue, etc.  And, it being the internet, there are many of these individuals who will react or over-react in some really cringe worthy manners.  I try to keep an even keel but I do admit to the occasional guilty pleasure of watching some word sparring (which sometimes turns humorous or even instructive), and like a train wreck you can't look away.

That said, I find these boards to be very mild compared with a few other sites:  I look in on a local sports team blog and people can get hot under the collar easily.  This in turn is nothing compared to FB where there are out-and-out "shouting" matches with insults and little in the way of learned facts, no moderators to intervene and, even more regrettably, less humor.  I've been collecting for more than fifty years and I still find things to learn on this site, probably because of the older, more experienced crowd that has seen some water flow under the bridge in terms of the market, creators, trends, conventions, and anything else related to comics, but also life in general.  There are many differing people here also, ranging from the ever-day schmoe (me) to professionals, not only in comics but in other occupations.  I usually see nothing more than constructive criticism and helpful advice generally geared towards pointing someone in the right direction to maintain the rules and spirit of these boards.  Maybe I lead a sheltered life?  Anyway, I think there is more of "this" than the "other."

Now what I have noticed is that this board will not suffer fools that continue to be fools or worse, fools that try to swindle other boardies.  It's really something to see when an entire community pitches in to help the guy who's books were stolen or the guy who's trying to sell things that don't belong to him or other nefarious ways internet cheats try to dupe people out of money.  It's very uplifting, not to mention reassuring, that you can come to this small site on the net and more often than not come away with such positive experiences and happy endings that are generally reserved for... I dunno... porn sites?  Well, maybe not.

It makes interjecting into threads where there's no need for moderation not a good call.

He's not part of the team anymore. He's a coach. He got promoted to the Manager position and he can't go to lunch with the guys anymore. Not sure why you can't see this.

My boss is my best friend since 5th grade.  I'd rather go to lunch with him than most other people on the planet.  So your argument is pretty invalid to me.

I see people as people.  No matter where they are on the hierarchy of whatever.  I would eat lunch with a CEO and a homeless guy at the same table.  I would even share my food with them.

Heck I would gladly sit at a table and hang with you and Mike at the same time.

I think he's saying, everyone used to secretly know who the moderators were, and " they were all guys who hung out?"

But now that it's opened up to everyone and everyone can be friends with the moderator, instead of an "inclusive'in crowd" that his old friends are now disowning him? Is that what you're saying?

Well then are you saying the old mods used to be a secret who they were,.so that they could still post freely as regular board members? Cause that is not entirely true either. I knew several of the old mods,!

I do not however know @CGC Mike old board handle, and I know him as boardie Mike that has a bit of moderation capabilities.

Nothing more nothing less. I really don't see a problem with it, he gets paid to do a job as his manager says. I'm not sure any boardie complaints or influence will change that. It's what he signed up for is all. But anyway

No, that's not what I'm saying either. What I'm saying is he's no longer a boardie, he's now officially management and has to post as such. Interjecting into this thread in any capacity is wrong - that's not what a moderator should be doing. He's management. If he wants to post as a boardie, that's fine, but he can't do both.

The problem on this board for the three- or four-year period was exactly because there was remarkably heavy handed moderation that was absolutely not applied the same way across the boards by people who were both board members and moderators. They were doing a thankless job with no guidance or supervision, so it wasn't really their fault, and the actual CGC moderators had trigger fingers.

Now there's a "liaison" (whatever that is) in CGC Mike, who has some guidance and supervision, so that's great. But he's management and a moderator, and shouldn't be in conversations.

I understand now where you're coming from.

However he has relayed info to higher ups for us to get clarity, but I can see how that can be perceived. No harm no foul.

Well, since I have taken the position at CGC I have not made one personal post or reacted to anyone's post.  I do this to remain unbiased.    I do realize I am not "part of the team" anymore.  I am supposed to make this a fun place for people to hang out.  It would also be hard for me to host the next grading contest later this month without posting.  Anyhow, I will not be changing how I do things here.  That is all I have to say on this matter.

I really struggle to understand the animosity directed at CGCMike. 

Moderation is going to happen.  If it wasn't in place, this place would be the wild west. People would fight over politics, social issues, there would be insults and people challenging one another to fights in parking lots.  That kind of environment could give CGC a bad reputation and would ultimately result in the chat boards being not worth the headache. 

So moderators can either be behind the scenes enforcing rules without explanation....

Or they can come on, ask for community feedback and explain their actions, like Mike does. 

I have 0 issues with how Mike has conducted himself.  I really appreciate the changes he's made in the market place (reminding people of missed rules instead of just shutting them down) and i this is a big improvement over the masked / unmasked volunteer moderators of yesteryear.

This seems really odd to me, why would/should management or moderators not participate in conversation? I don't think I have ever had or heard of this expectation on a forum.
