This is a thread where the most sought after high ticket priced books that all desire are absolutely not welcomed. No, this is a thread for those usually modest middle of the road priced books that hold a special place in your heart. Owners of Detective #27, Suspense comics #3, Black Cat #50 or  Cinderella Love #25 need not apply. Let’s say books that usually fall under the $1000.00 price tag in the golden age to make them obtainable without giving up a kidney.
 

For me Journey into Mystery #17 fits in that group perfectly. A decent copy is cheap enough but it still ranks as one of my favorite pre code books. Partly due to having a real Black Mountain in my own city of San Diego county but mostly due to its bizarre cover of a mountain bursting apart a city with its shocking frozen faced woman looking right at us. Her gaze is priceless and the simple cartoon look just adds to the craziness of the cover. Sadly as it was to often the cover had nothing to do with any interior story. I would loved to have read about a giant city wrecking mountain.
 

Maybe it’s a bit of my own love too of the Monolith Monsters movie from the 1950’s which had giant rocks attacking a town by smashing down on it.

 

 

 

So what’s one of your favorites and why the love?

although i think theres still lots to chose in that area if you can find them, but I find Cosmo cat  #1 ahead of its time for 1946 standards in cover art. While it'll probably never be a 1000.00 book, i'm drawn to the cover and ironically i just finally got it slab. Pretty tough book to find IMO

This book was tied for #9 position of top Overstreet 100 back in the 1970s. Since then, it has plummeted and can still be had for the same exact money it went for in the 70’s. It’s a terrific collection of “other worldly” Hal Foster, and I recently bought it off a Heritage weekly for a song

Yeah Airboy’s are underrated. This one also falls into my threads theme as a cheaper keeper of a book I have a really lot of love for despite its low dollar value.

I'm going to post two pics here...

Jo-Jo Congo King. This particular copy purchased from former San Diego Comic Con dealer room facilitator Tom French in the late 80's or early 90's for $40. This was the comic that sent me down that rabbit hole of collecting GGA Fox Comics and is one of my favorite Jack Kamen covers of all time. Mountain of Skulls (and the interior is very cool as well). I don't know what a decent copy goes for these days. No need to look, as this copy is good enough for me, brings back good memories of Tom, and all that hunting ever since I bought it. 

This is a recent acquisition, although I have been a Simon and Kirby fan for decades, and a Boy's Ranch fan as well. Boy's Ranch is my favorite comic book western series and the stories and art are always a joy to behold. I don't know why it took me so long to add the #1 (in decent shape) to my collection. Still looking for a 3, 5 and a 6 (hmmm...)

I do think Matt Baker made use of the best color palette at St. John...I am never lucky enough to find those Mopsy's cheap, however, and would have been all over that issue if I ever did find an affordable copy

I’ve never in my life spent $1000 on a Golden Age comic, so technically everything I have will qualify. I’ll start with Boy Commandos #1.

Same here but out of all of those, a book like this is one I come back to time and time again - a book that qualifies as my being amazed I own it and one of whose cover and interior I will never tire -

Not just one book but sometimes short runs. I love the work Werner Roth put out during this time period and he had his hand on Apache Kid for a spell -

Same applies to portions of a run, for example, John Severin work on American Eagle in Prize Comics Western - I really love whole covers focused one character / feature -
