I don't think there are many W AF15s...I know someone paid about a 50% premium for a W copy (especially in lower grade) they just don't happen.

50% is a pretty hefty premium.   Maybe settle for ow/w :insane:

I'm OK with C/OW pages on books from this era.

I only ask this as I am not 100% sure this is the process - but wouldn't the acid in a cream-paged book threaten to tan the cover quicker over the long-term (I'm talking 10 years+), and if the book currently has cream pages that some of that process has already begun (dependent on when the microchamber papers were inserted in the book on slabbing?).

The book was cream to off white before it was graded, where it sat, as is for 50+ years, now with the micro chamber paper and proper storage, the book is not going to degrade significantly in any of our lifetimes.

Page quality is distinct from cover tanning.  Both are noted separately (the former on the label, the latter in the notes).

I'm going to hazard a guess that the reason for two separate notations in grading is because the process that creates tanning is different than the process that causes paper to yellow?

I should add that the OP's book is a good example of that.  The cover is bright, including the title, the expansive sky area, and the white price circle and publication date.  The back cover could be nice, too, but hard to be sure w/ images provided.

There is also the mindset that a straight resubmit can turn a book with CROW pages to OW-W.  I have had that personally happen to me.  The graders are not consistent when it comes to page quality.

I remember hearing a story that when CGC first started out in Jersey (and maybe Florida?) they had overhead fluorescent lights in the grading room, causing the PQ to vary widely.

Based on the comments and advice, I think I'll take a pass on this copy. Big thanks to all of you, I appreciate you!

So just as a comparison - would you be willing to buy up to the no-chip, OW at 3.5 for $36k? (Jan Heritage sale).   Or save a little for a 3.5 with slightly less chipping in OW for $31k (March CC sale).   Or go up to a 4.5 OW no chip for $38k (March Ebay)

For me if all three would have presented themselves at the same time, I would take option 2. Saving a little $$ is always good, plus OW pages, and that amount of chipping I can definitely live with.

Then sounds like you have a good sense of what you value and where you are willing to compromise.   I don't think the 4.0 you were looking at is a bad deal - but it is not a killer deal for sure.     Though depending on your sales tax situation and the nature of this transaction - you need to consider if a 4.0 private sale looks like a really great deal.    That ComicConnect 3.5 with limited chipping would cost me $34k (10% sales tax state) which turns into a $1k premium over a private 4.0 C/OW at $33k.   Gets a bit harder for me.

Hey all --

I agree that this book is pretty fairly priced, but it's not a steal, and that the MC + PQ does make it a tougher resell for profit.  A few thousand maybe, but that would be about it.

On the flip side, waiting for the stronger 4.0 will probably mean competition well above the $33k level.  I'm not selling mine (4.0 wp), but I'd probably put the floor at $50k...not going to get it back anytime soon, etc.
