Popular Post ttfitz Posted October 12, 2023 Popular Post Share Posted October 12, 2023 Haven't seen this posted here, so thought I'd pass it along From deadline.com: Keith Giffen, a veteran writer and artist whose work included DC’s Lobo and the Jamie Reyes version of the Blue Beetle and Marvel’s Rocket Raccoon, has died at the age of 70. His death was affirmed by longtime collaborator Paul Levitz on Facebook. The family of the comics veteran announced his death on Facebook Wednesday via a sardonic post pre-written by Giffen: A stroke was attributed as the cause of death. I met him a few years ago in Baltimore, and I said to him, about his Legion of Super-Heroes work, I couldn't decide at the time whether I loved it or hated it. Popular Post Ken Aldred Posted October 12, 2023 Popular Post Share Posted October 12, 2023 (edited) Really sad news about a writer-artist I’ve followed since the late 70s, from his short run on Defenders. Of course, his Great Darkness Saga is an 80s classic, but I rated pretty much all of his Legion work through to the beginning of the 90s quite highly. A creator with tremendous range, quite intense at times, but also having a great and often bizarre sense of humour on Ambush Bug and Justice League as well. That says all you need to know as I was a total 100% Marvel Zombie and it was Giffen and DeMatteis's JLI that finally brought me over to the Dark Side. No easy feat as I was basically threatened with my job if I didn't give this title a go. Sure glad I did! The first 28 or so issues are near perfect. "One Punch!" Bwah Ha Ha Ha...... I didn't appreciate his art after his style change, but he proved to be a great writer, as well. That's where I first became familiar with his work. Because of that, I took those issues for him to sign at Wizard World Chicago in 2006. He went on and on about how awful they are. Granted, he was a Kirby clone back then and his work hadn't fully developed yet. Zonker Posted October 12, 2023 Share Posted October 12, 2023 In addition the work previously mentioned here, he also was instrumental in getting DC's weekly series "52" out the door on time, every week, doing most of the breakdowns for the revolving door of pencilers needed to make that project work. kmiracleman Posted October 12, 2023 Share Posted October 12, 2023 Just FYI (but especially to the younger boardies out there) - Giffen did the artwork & helped with the plotting on a short-lived series called "The Heckler" from DC Comics back in the early '90s. It's such a great, hilarious and loving parody of superhero comics. Highly recommended. Much more light-hearted than his equally excellent Lobo miniseries (both of them), and super cheap in any back-issue bin. Ian Winner Posted October 12, 2023 Share Posted October 12, 2023 I loved his work on Legion and Justice League. While he could always take things a little too far and some of his work was not to my liking (Trencher-anything in that style), overall he created some great books that could be both grim and humerous at a time when comics were taking themselves way too seriously. Whenever I see a James Gunn or Taika Waititi production, the humor (and absurd violence) reminds me of Keith's late 80's/early 90's comics. I own several of his pages from the 5 Yr Later Run of Legion that I treasure including one on my wall. RIP Keith!
