According to Mike's grade distribution table, 101 players completed Round 1 (down from 109 at sign-up).  Here are the key measures of central tendency for this round (Mean = the average grade; Median = the middle grade in a numerically rank-ordered list; Mode = the most common grade):

The Board scored 135 bulls-eyes in Round 1 (27% of all grades submitted, compared to an average of 21% in CGC Grading Contests #1 thru 7).  Here are a few other notable observations based on the data reported above:

• Book #01 (Supersnipe #9):  The most difficult book for the Board as a whole, with only 15% at the same grade as CGC and only 37% within one grade increment of CGC.  Collectively, the Board was two grade increments more critical than CGC (5.4 vs 6.5). 
• Book #02 (Super Mystery):  The second most difficult book for the Board as a whole, with only 23% of the contestants at the same grade as CGC and only 58% within one grade increment of CGC.  Collectively, the Board was one grade increment more critical than CGC (4.0 vs 4.5).
• Book #03 (Horrific #7):  An easy book for the Board as a whole, with 30% of the contestants at the same grade as CGC and 78% within one grade increment of CGC.  Collectively, the Board was essentially identical to CGC (2.6 vs 2.5). 
• Book #04 (Perfect Crime #28):  Another easy book for the Board as a whole, with 36% of the contestants at the same grade as CGC and 73% within one grade increment of CGC.  Collectively, the Board was essentially identical to CGC (3.4 vs 3.5). 
• Book #05 (War Action #2): Yet another easy book for the Board as a whole, with 31% of the contestants at the same grade as CGC and 72% within one grade increment of CGC.  Collectively, the Board was essentially identical to CGC (7.4 vs 7.5). 

A very strong start for the Board as a whole.      I think I have a good shot at finishing in the top 100!

One 🎯 and just .5 off all the rest except the first one. Guttersnipe I definitely spent the most time on. I started at 4.5 and kept bumping it up but not high enough. What tripped me up was I was sure the spine was partially split but I guess my eyes betrayed me.

In a dynamic that's *very* familiar to many of us... it looks like you second-guessed them all in the wrong direction.

The funny thing is that I wasn't second-guessing them. Those were the grades that made sense to me. If I had second-guessed, all the grades would have been higher, because that's what happened in the last contest. My new strategy is to submit my first impression. When I did that the last time, the grades came in between what I thought they sould be and what they were.
