CGC Census Historical Data
1 1

11 posts in this topic

Does anyone know if there is a way to find historical data for the CGC Census?    A YouTuber recently made reference to a title adding 40 copies to census since April.    Got me curious about trends in census count growth for key issues from different eras.

I started a small list to start tracking some but would really love if there was something out there already

cgcdata.com very useful.  It is how we know that the relative scarcity of Marvel Spotlight #5 in grades above 9.0 is the real deal. It explains why it really was not surprising that a 9.8 fetched $264K in June 2021 based on how the CGC census changed over the past 20 years compared to other biggies like IH#1 and GSX1. And it confirms that despite that huge sale in June 2021, barely any MS5s have come out of the woodwork since June 2021 in grades 9.2 and above.  And that, in turn, explains why MS5 in 9.8 went for an even loftier $360K in January this year, b/c folks are realizing that most MS5s > 9.0  would have been slabbed already for a subsequent lucrative sale, or at least graded (to know what they have).  Probably same story for SS1 and SS4 in >9.2!   Should be fun to see such trends, DC#!

And it's how we know that there are two UK Price Variant Gorgo #1s on the census...

Two correlations are very evident from the CGC data:

1) The most sought after comics by collectors these days are much more common in the census than other comics. (Check the relative quantities of #1's compared to #2's.)

2) The comics that started to be collected, i.e. hoarded, the earliest are more common. That's why Marvels are so much more common than other comics of the same age. The Marvels weren't as prone to be abused and tossed. They were much more likely to be saved.

Furthermore I believe the actual number of comics in collections dwarves the number "known" as reflected in the CGC population stats. The CGC numbers nevertheless reflect the comparative ease or difficulty of finding those particular comics in the marketplace.
