Well it is #3 in Overstreet's top 10 romance, and it doesn't show up that often. Coupled with the girl's jutting profile and you've got demand. I got my copy around that same time from Harley for $180.00, so I got lucky He had another copy for $300.00 I should have bought. Here's mine.

Nice. What you paid is roughly in line with the other Bakers you got back then. But on Heritage in 2006, I didn't think the market existed for a Baker romance comic to net $1400. Figured at that time the only book tied to his name fetching hefty prices was PL 17, mainly due to its association with SOTI. I stand corrected. Some other noteworthy older sales:

It is lovely. I found your collection accidentally on MySlabbedComics while looking for Baker stuff via image search.

Oh, my, love the bottom sketch.  I'm not sure I've seen the last two of these.  Where do they come from?  I recently picked up Manhunt v01n08 and found no Baker (reading it as my gym book this week) which leaves me with I believe one remaining St. John digest I haven't seen with a decent possibility to contain his art (Verdict v01n01).

    Both from Nugget Magazine #1

But the scope and high profile and number of dicey attributions with Baker strikes me.  And the fact that these identifications never seem to go away

I've mentioned this for a while, especially with the Phantom Lady covers. It's very annoying and suspect. Flyin' Jenny is another I brought up recently that is most likely a Jack Kamen cover misattributed to Baker. There's two graded copies up on ebay both with Baker's name emblazoned on the description. I don't know how it started or why it continues, but it needs to be corrected.

The Saint #4 -- It's a lovely cover, and we've posted it here/argued about it here enough that I kinda sorta want one. But yeah, the formal poses/layout and the super-tight inking style are iffy at best. It doesn't feel Baker to me.

Well said! The gangster guy's clayish lobster hand gripping the gun is further proof it's not Baker. Usually hands/limbs are a good way to tell.

I recently found a few Baker western books buried in some GA western boxes. I was shocked when I saw the prices I had on them. I quickly released them from their yellowed bags, put them in shiny mylars and of course “adjusted” their prices…

Obviously, nobody wanted them at their previous prices. :roflmao:

    The Hawk?

Been waiting for the cycle of rising prices on Baker romance to trickle on over to Baker babe non-romance but even this is a very surprising result tonight.  Not a rare book in this grade at all, but one of my favorites anyway.

Was watching this one, a bit baffled as well. Makes me grateful I won Diary Secrets 20/29 at the prices I did.

Well, there's one less.  I did buy an Authentic Police Cases #10. :D  Slabbed, but not high-grade or anything, and I may have overpaid a bit, but what the heck, why not?

From my notes, it looks like MCS also had a Cinderella Love #29 (I almost pulled the trigger on this, but just couldn't. lol.), Hawk #12, Teenage Romances #1, Teenage Temptations #3, Wartime Romances #16 & #18, etc.  I'm sure I saw others from other dealers there including high-end wall books, too, but I didn't write anything down.

Thanks for filling me in. APC #10 is a good one, I've seen it online but never pulled the trigger. Low grade doesn't bother me, especially when it comes to Baker. Pretty much the only way I can stockpile his covers. Always thought Hawk #12 was one of his cooler western ones. I have a 4.0 Hawk #9. Haven't seen too many graded copies for #12.

Pretty sure it's in a magazine sized slab.  Which happens to quite a lot of the taller St. John books, but I'm not sure this specific issue needs it.

Gotcha, that is odd. I was unsure because the other graded copies I've seen of this book were all in normal sized slabs.
