  1. Wow, I thought he did a great job on AF #15...in fact it's the only time he's ever done a terrific job on a Spidey illustration IMO...personally, I think ASM #1 is the worst rendered cover of all the 1961-1964 Marvel keys. Personally, I would put DD #1 as being the worst rendered of the keys, but that is due to the cover clutter with the small boxes.
  2. Yep...saw that. Old label 5.0 with cream just might be a CR/OW 5.5 and a steal at $3600 Well, if the final price was for an actual sale, then it was a steal at only $3600.
  3. Yes, definitely. I think it's affecting SC23 and 24 also. Anyway high grade 10cts DC are so rare, they MUST be valuable. It's crazy to see AF15 so expensive when you see the number of copy going around DC rules I think I might test the waters with a 7.0 GL #1 on eBay to see what the current market is.
  4. Sure but it started almost two years ago...now it seems to have leveled off. The last sale for a 7.0 was late last year for over $2K. Where was that? kryptospidey I believe Clink had a 7.0 go for $2200 or so as well last fall.
  5. ASM #1 did have a bit of a spike with the movie, and I think (and hope ) that GL #1 in 7.0 will do the same as well. It is funny - a couple of years ago you could find a 7.0 or better GL #1 no problem but now the supply has dried up. There are only a few sales listed on GPA from the past 6 months - a 6.0 copy of GL #1 sold for $1250 in January 2011, a 6.5 went for $1350 in Novebmer 2010, and the last 8.5 went for $5100 in December 2010. The 4.5 copy in the last Clink auction ended up at $860, which is a fairly nice price. FWIW, GL #1/JLA #1/Flash #105 in 6.0 or better are decent books to grab now. They will pop sooner or later as well once the SC #4/SC #22/B&B #28 triumverate get a bit too pricey.
  6. And be the 1st on the planet to pay quadruple-guide for a SC #22 Sounds tempting to me Great upgrade for you...but some small risk on grade and PQ, but maybe an upside potential too. Now only if you can see in hand to make the call. It's a tough call. My other book's a 4.5, OW/W, so it's VERY close. If resubbed and nothing changed, it's only a .5 bump in grade and a drop in PQ. I was really hoping for a 6.0 You're kidding right? 4.5 to 6.0. +1 Well, if 7.0s and 7.5s can be pressed to 9.0+s, why not? Just to be clear, I was talking about upgrading to a 6.0 book, not pressing it out of a 4.5 Either way would work........

  8. Based on my experience in resubbing old label books, it will come back as a CR/OW. If the bends/creases on the right side visible in the pics are pressable, then it has a good shot at a 5.5 as well (and on the right day maybe a 6.0)..........
  9. It is the FF #1 of SA DCs. It's ok, being a DC'er most my life, I'm used to the abuse Just like FF #1 and SC #4 then.
  10. Let's cheer DC's. Well, I don't think it's wrong in this post to talk about SC23 and 24. People who buy a SC22, normaly like Hal and those three books are kind of a set in my mind. I have all three. So for me, people gathering here are the same than the one who likes the SC23 and 24. I was just kidding with my post (kind of ).
  11. Let's cheer DC's. Keep the focus.......there are just as many crappy DC books as Marvel.
  12. Set up your own SC #23 and SC #24 thread if you want to talk about it.......second tier books like that or SC #4 do not deserve to be discussed in the SC #22 thread.
  13. Right now I would only buy one if I could find it raw and for OSPG. Looking at the $$$ a 6.0+ would set me back, I would rather put that toward a pre-Robin Tec with a Batman cover or an Action under #20 with a Supes cover. (thumbs u
  14. I think that there will be a bunch of copies on the market in a couple of months again, but the big spike in 2009 also forced a lot of fence sitters (including me) to finally get a copy of SC #22 that will sit in collections for a long time now. It seems like that is the pattern with SA DC collectors - they buy a copy to keep for the long run. WRT high grade books, the best known copy of SC #22 to date (Clink 9.0) is locked up tight. I think that SC #22 is so hard to find in 8.0+ that if you can afford to hold it you will. That being said, over the next decade I expect a number of new HG GA and SA collections to hit the market as long time collectors or their heirs cash out. While these boards are a good representation of the active collector set, there are a lot of old timers with collections amassed in the 50s, 60s and 70s that have yet to resurface. I am hoping the next decade will see some forgotten gems come to market - even if I can't afford them, I can appreciate them. (thumbs u
  15. SC #22 has always been tough to find in anything better than 6.0, and it looks like you might have to lower that bar to 5.0 since copies in that grade are not that easy to find either. I think it has more to do with the release date (1959) than anything. At that time, Ducks and Western/War books were still the main genres, with only Superman and Batman titles holding any ground on the super-hero side of things. There are more copies of SC #4 out there in 6.0+, but since the book is in a bit of a lull right now there is no need to move them.
  16. I think most semi-knowledgeable collectors have always had it as a SA DC Top 5 book. But that didn`t translate into a high value, since being top 5 SA DC in comic collecting circles is kind of like being in the top 5 at Cal Tech... in football. But weren't you just chastising somebody else about things not always being about the money? If the philistines don't appreciate Green Lantern, well screw them. And their mothers probably throw rocks at airplanes too. I wasn`t complaining about it, just pointing out the reality that in terms of value, SA DCs are 2nd class citizens behind their Marvel counterparts. I have no issues with that--it is what it is. It is the opposite with GA where the DC keys rule the roost. Both companies had their "strong" periods that we can all appreciate.
  17. Looking at the book, my question is how does something with that chip and huge fugly crease, along with a nasty stain (tape inside cover?) on the lower spine (more noticeable back cover), plus the other wear shown in the photos, get a 6.0 in the first place?
  18. Now, back to the topic at hand, what did everyone think about the final price of that fugly SC #22 on Clink this week?
  19. I think it was actually more valuable in the guide. One problem has been that the book was harder to find than the big DC books before the internet but Heritage has had the same few copies of Marvel #1 (especially the CGC 9.0 Pay Copy) come to market several times giving the impression that the book is "not that hard to find". Couple that with the internet talk of how there are "no relevant A tier characters" in the book and people likely step back from the book. To me it's still one of the greatest (and should be) most valuable comics of all time. What do I know, I'm a Marvel Zombie? I feel the same way about Whiz 2 (1) too. This is playing out just like it has in other hobbies where only the top tier key items survive the test of time. MC #1 is a 2nd tier GA key (I would argue that Captain America Comics #1 is more key Timely GA book due to the character), and Whiz 2 (1) is a 3rd tier key now. While they are cool books, their significance will likely continue to wane over time as the comic collecting world becomes smaller and only the top pieces hold widespread investment interest (wasn't an issue of Four Color or WDC&S considered the grail for comics at one time as well?). Let's face it, if you are going to spend $100K on a Marvel/Timely/Atlas you are probably better off going with a high grade AF #15 than a similar valued MC #1 for the long run.
  20. But SC #22 does not have Neal Adams artwork........ If it did, I think it would be even more valuable than Action #1 and Detective #27... combined! I would not go that far. Marvel Comics #1 and Captain America Comics #1 combined is probably a safer bet. I`ve got old newspaper that`s been used to wrap fish that`s worth more than a Marvel Comics #1. True enough! I think we should be careful, though, as we don't want to attract the MC #1 trolls to this thread......

  23. Based on my recollection of the scans in the past, the Clink SC #22 9.0 would have a good shot at pressing out to a 9.2 now. (thumbs u
  24. I thought it ended up someplace here. (thumbs u
