  1. Great post Doc, and a heart felt tribute to a man that left an indelible mark on the Silver Age. That particular issue of Lovers has a Baker story, the reason I bought a copy long ago. Eventually gone, that cover really speaks of Vinnie's style and point of view.
  2. Will did a great job getting my Giant Comics Edition 13 off and to me fast. Smooth transaction. Highly recommended.
  3. Who grabbed this while I was napping? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Teen-Age-Romances-32-July-1953-St-John-Classic-Matt-Baker-cover-GGA-VG-/161723303774?nma=true&si=iZwqNnGq1eGW1korhO0uZf6h%252B7k%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
  4. This was my first Baker romance. First time I ever saw one. I was looking for Phantom Lady's and Seven Seas. I didn't now about St. John's. I was at a dealers house talking about my new found interest and he pulled this out. Threw it in with my other purchases. 1999/2000.
  5. Why does this issue of Cindy sell for so much? Is it considered an exceptionally "hot" cover, or what? Would someone enlighten me? It's a cute cover, in a headlighty way. Maybe I should sell mine.
  6. A grader selling a book he graded? Talk about conflict of interest.
  7. "Fading" wasn't the right word. I thought that the staining so prevalent with St John's might have caused the original blue to turn green. You may be right about different parts of the print run, though because these books bundled together coverless returns, I wonder if the print run was long enough for this kind of striking color difference to be explained that way. It's hard to say what the print run on this issue was. Some 25 centers seem to exist in quantity. This comic is rare because of it's suggestive cover.
  8. That's the New Brunswick copy. I know it's history, including Steve's and my original grade. What goes around, comes around. Sounds drama-riffic. Do tell? We graded it 5.5. A nice 5.5! It is nice, at that. So why the "What goes around, comes around" -- ? Well I first saw the book with the 800+ collection first brought from NB. Then most of it went away. Then I saw it at Harley's booth. Then it went away. Now I'm seeing it here. Makes sense. The way your original statement comes off, stating that you "know the history of the book" and the "original grade" you gave it, vs. what it is today, and finishing with "What goes around, comes around" implies something nefarious had happened/some ill dealings transpired, in between the raw state when you had it, and the 6.0 slab it resides in now. That is what I assumed too. I was being too literal I guess. Nothing nefarious was meant or implied.
  9. Blue doesn't fade to green. The blue must have been from a different part of the print run. I've seen the 8.0 Lloyd Jacquet copy and it has the same green colour strike.

  12. Thought I'd bump this thread with a nice one.
  13. A picture of Ron detoxing from buying big books - the GA DT's, it's called. It's all in the mind, but it feels so real!

  15. Hold the phone. I don't think this could be the same one. The one being talked about died childless.
  16. Yes, and then he got disillusioned when he started slabbing and getting back some PLODS. Of course, his divorce really disillusioned him. That and Scientology and the I.R.S. And the reviews for his movies. There were also the books stolen from his home by friends/acquaintances that I think helped turn him off collecting. In the end, his IRS problems caused him to have to liquidate nearly all his assets, although I'm not sure where he had already sold off his comics by then. Lisa Marie was also part of the equation. That's the Scientology part of my comment.

  19. I got this at a show 18 months ago in Toronto. The dealer is a known boardie. Guess I lucked out.
  20. Boy am I glad I got my copy... for 5 bucks.
