  1. great stuff, have you every been to a woody show in encintas, CA...they are true classic.
  2. but you also miss the people and the great conversations etc and the best panels in the world , its just not about box diving or just buying comic books,,,,
  3. there was a section when chuck or somebody said he would bid on his own books on Ha.com when he sold the Red Raven 1 and Spirit's. I came out against it but I dont think he responds, how can he defend his prices anyway...it would be a firestorm, so he gives 50% of 1000% of what the true value is, he does have to choice to price his stuff at "any price" when you do that you end up with inventory...things sit..now he has the biggerst comic book stock in the world over 10 million books...not a bad thing, but if they are ever dumped on the market..well
  4. I know Howard went to an early SDCC, and I read he had sold his magaizne collection a few years ago
  5. A SUPER GREAT POSTING>>>MORE PICS PLEASE
  6. I am going to do a change of attitude on SDCC especially 2018 and what started me thinking was the chance encounter with a book called "Comic Book People photo's" 1970-1980"s by Jackie Estrada as I was walking the isles of SDCC 2018, now folks if you were there, the old saying goes back in the day at SDCC say #2 or 3 you had to be there. This year, I would say you had to be at SDCC, I understand its hard to get a ticket, but this years show was outstanding. The half glass full vs the half glass empty cannot stand. As a critic of how the convention trended it is safe to say a a number of comic book retailers argument is higher prices/less traffic, well agreed but it is still worth it to be there, for that one new whale client or somebody who comes up and purchases stuff you have had for "years" Here is what impressed me the most 1-CC/Metro 's booth with very high display cabinets. You had to be there to fell the impact on this one, clearly in terms of resale dealers they are second to none, but the way the books are displayed it elevates GA/SA comic books to sort of a pedestal. I really liked the Cap#1 7.0 as well as a host of other books, soooo much better that putting them up on a rack. the best display I have ever seen at a comic book convention. Well Done. 2-SDCC beats Amazon: The comic book store/Bud Plant killer gets topped out. I recently sold my old marvel masterworks to buy the new giant editions which also included the letter pages and some extras, they have a higher quality image and on a brighter paper. For $50,no tax, no shipping brand new for the amazing spiderman omnibus #1 which includes AF 15, 1-38,FF1 ann story, and ST Ann #2 as well as some other extras as an example. 3- In going isle to isle, I saw a lot of great new material that there is no way I would of ever found about it had I not been there, its just touching the book, looking thru 20/30 great books to bring you back to the hope that print media is not deal, let me give you an example, I look at the book " Turn loose our death rays and kill them all" The complete works of Fletcher Hanks"...who created 50 stories for GA comics in the early days 1939-1941, in the SF of Basil Wolverton...this is the hardcover edition with all of his stories, the hardcover book is just amazing from Fantagraphics...There are too many to list here. I have been collecting for 50 years, I am still getting educated at this late time. 4-Our community, even if you buy nothing just a chance to interact with the best of the best is worth the price of admission, yes the convention evolves, this is the first year without Terry Stroud "not" being at his table, he did not have one if you have attended you will know about that inside joke. For example the 12.2 Million recent comic auction at HA was big news , the last being 10.8 in 2012..a new step up for comic book auctions. I had a lot of great conversations on the state of the comic book and art market both which are very strong with positive signs growth will continue especially in the lower tier books $2K-8K.. that is where the whale collections are going..after getting the big books. 5- New players, there was a auction house that had a new display with the original T2...but also had one the best Ditko spiderman pages coming up for auction that I have seen in a long time as well as other comic book art, and ever in the entertainment section a lot of new players, especially that "Deadpool" band. In summary, the old comic book dealers have been trying to revise history buy saying it aint what it used to be..just a comic book convention. But MS Estrada book has reminded me , it NEVER was just about comic books or just about a room full dealers with resale comics. Even in the beginning there was Frank Capra, Kirk Alan, Ray Bradbury and persons who came just for the costume ball. Jackie's book breaks it down into groups, like SF/Movie/Creators/Publishers etc.. look carefully at these photos and groups that they were.it is a very important reminder that SDCC has evolved from the beginning to what is today. Bigger, Badder, and Much more diverse than anyone back in the early 1970's could of ever hopped for. SDCC I salute you!
  7. I think there is an interesting back story on that where house investor.....that I have heard....chuck continues to buy in bulk, on his latest newsletter he appears to have bought two truck loads from the east coast. With new comic book sales down 10% and Graphic novels sales down 9% in the last year, look for Steve Geppi to to heavy into the back issue market and buy chuck out.
  8. There will be other dealers replacing them at SDCC, just look at Bud Plant, he used to have 8 tables. I agree however that the future of a true comic book collector con is the 1/2 day show. I hope they improve the hours and location..Sat is a much better day and add at least 4 hours to the show and it can really grow, so hopefully you can get input to torpedo for next year. SDCC has shut out a lot people, so there is a need for that to counterbalance the effect. I find that Wonder Con has taken its place, it still feels like a comic book convention, 3 days and not too small and not too big, with a little room still to grow. Thank you for your outstanding report as usual and Cong on your great buys...
  9. The stores are failing like Bud Plant etc because of Amazon, the bread and butter for the future of any comic book store is Trade paperbacks or graphic novels. The single monthly printed comic book with a cliff ending is a dinosaur. So we have a situation, where as in the early days, comic books stores created new customers in a web-free world, we not see the future of the printed comic book in terms of a complete story or novel. Marvel and DC will only continute to print at a loss, which they are doing, while the intellectual property created generates more money on that end and Box Office and toy sales justify it. Otherwise while they will still exist, they all go to straight the the web. That is the future, I don't think the trend can be reversed, it might be slowed with a drastic reduction of price for the printed comic book and keeping the Web comic book price HIGHER, however how long does anybody think that is gonna last. Amazon is ultimate the comic book store killer, just as it destroyed crown books, and all the other small book stores, and then the big ones with only a few "barnes and nobles" left standing. Who is gonna spend 20% more to Bud Plant and save that plus get free shipping .....to get the same graphic novel. A lot of factors here, greed on special "worthless editions" etc etc. and how many people on the board buy a monthly comic book 8 part mini series at a comic book store...or wait for the graphic novel. Rock, the comic book stores need to reinvent themselves with eye on taking on Amazon.
  10. too few hours and on a sat the hours should be extended otherwise run it sat and add say 4 hours. Too close to SDCC, I want these shows to succeed..hope they try and improve it again next year
  11. you always get great stuff...let us see please..
  12. This is the type of stuff that makes E-bay a garbage can..a few rotten apples gaming the system, it just make sense, use Ha, CC, CL auctions and let them bear the risk. sorry for your loss, I will be at SDCC and key an eye out this week.
  13. too much drive not enough show hours with SDCC on wed, see you guys at SDCC
  14. the problem is they marvel have no "Plan"..this wall-mart thing is OK on dc's part even if it fails, they are trying. With sales down 10% last year and graphic novels down 9% the trend is alarming. There was a link on the boards or check on youtube for Geppi's state of the art of the comic book retailer address recently, he looked like a cheerleader with no crowd....something has to be done or the print comic book will no longer exist in 5/10 years if that
  15. have all the tickets been sold< i thought there was a limit on attendance
  16. Bought from them first at SDCC when they selling some mile high lower tier stuff 70’s ish, only did one mail order... there is a reason why I have never bought since on the mail order side. It’s a free country they can price it however they want but imagine a newcomer buying from them first...not a good long term plan, their website is sub-par but chuck wants more comics...and more...buy low and sell high.... get more comics... watch for a sale possibly to steve geppi in the future.
  17. his early AA/AF run of Sci-fi is unmatched, as well as AMS 1-38...RIP
  18. Agreed, simply amazing and it is one where black and white is just perfect.
  19. under grading the book when buying and selling it under graded does the original seller a disservice and that seller is the one to bear the reduced sales price, to be fair, grading should be accurate as possible for everybody and 9.4 is not a VF under any circumstances.
  20. seven hours of show time is absurd, Robo, if henryspencer is correct, I can see a one day show...say 9-7 seems much better which is 10 hours, they should of made it two days if they want 7 hours of showtime per day....too bad and LA traffic is the worst.
