  1. I've read some of Pat's wonderful columns, but I've never heard his take on this. Got a link or paste? I'd love to read what he has to say.
  2. This one is a little more creepy... I think mostly due to the sculptor, who looks somewhat sinister. Still pretty tame, in fact I think it may have been reprinted as a cover in the 70's, but I'm not positive.
  3. I just wonder if the honchos at Atlas were trying to tame things down before the senate hearings. Rumor has it that the "other guys" who were serious besides EC were trying to get the code to basically neuter EC alone. There is "proof" for this theory, but it is all circumstantial.....
  4. Yes, hard to believe that a title with such awesome covers earlier in the run would change gears so much before the code.....
  5. My thoughts on your question: I draw the line with content. If the book has a horror cover and is the first to have nothing but original horror stories on the interior it is the first horror comic.
  6. Wonder if there is any innuendo implied with that one?
  7. I think it's for that grade, but some fool will probably come along.....
  8. That's what I get for impulse buying without doing any research! Suppose I'll have to drop more coin on this unedited version.
  9. Yeah, that was LB's philosophy on how to turn a quick & cheap profit in comic publishing. Draw the buyer in with a loud cover & pack the interior with mostly reprinted material.
  10. .....very pre-code horror related... ...I just picked up the "TALES FROM THE CRYPT: SEASON ONE" DVD, a two disk set. The second disk has a feature on it called "TFTC: From Comic Books to Television." This is a must have for PCH collectors. The focus is mainly on the comics and is very slickly produced. Lots of shots of more than just EC horror comics, plenty of the "other guys" on it as well. I can't suggest this one enough for any horror comic collector, especially those among us who are "video starved."
  11. hey Sterling, do I win anything for being the first to guess your new ID
  12. The dialogue here the last day or so has been exactly what I was hoping this thread could become eventually. Fantastic stuff, everybody! As far as my thoughts on the Overstreet: I think they really need to lay out in print their criteria for what is "supernatural, horror, weird, etc." the same way they have for their "scarcity" ratings. ( I might add some books designated as such - scarce, rare, what have you, are sometimes still argueable to say the least. We've been there before.) Basically, I get the feeling they often change stuff to suit their own agendas, whatever those might be. As for my own opinions, I can totally agree with Pov with the "sci-fi" label for Frankenstein, etc. Technically speaking, they could be classified as such more than Star Wars, which is nothing more than a "space opera." Sometimes though I think that horror wears many hats, and it's putridness oozes into any number of genres. Take Jaws, Alien, Psycho, and the Exorcist for example. All very different vibes, but all with elements easily classifiable as horror. To me, there is no need for Overstreet to attempt to "break down" horror into sub-categories. Simply put, I'd rather see a reversion to simply "horror."
  13. Man, guess I don't post fast enough! Thanks for that info, Adam!
  14. I know you made the poll, PCK. I responded to the first post about only Fox horror book. Hehehe. I don't think I phrased that post quite correctly, Pov. I was trying to use the little gremlin to illustrate my initial indecisiveness about including Fox in the poll. After weighing it out, I decided Jekyl & Hyde is recognized generally as horror enough & put them on the list w/all the other publishers. I know that you know that I made the poll, so that wasn't what I wanted to convey. I think I need some gremlin lessons from Greggy. Now, I can't wait to hear from Adam wether or not that other book is all horror or part horror. What a find!
  15. Dang! I leave for a birthday party & return to find the Undead Horror Thread in the midst of quite possibly the best discussion we have ever had to date! With great restraint I will withold further posting until later.... too much beer.
  16. Hey Pov, the Jekyl & Hyde book was the reason I myself put them on the list of "horror publishers" for the poll.
  17. Jeffro, let me know if you ever want to part with the Amazing Detective 13!
  18. BTW - the above JIUW 26 has an Atom Bomb panel. Kewl.
