  1. The 'Swamp Girl!" cover is cool enough..... gotta wonder what they were thinking about when they titled a story "BONG!"..... Maybe they were in cahoots with the gang at Superior!
  2. The Atlas 'formula' must have worked well for them. My opinion: some days I like it just fine, other days I lean toward the single image theme. Today I'm feeling like the three panel formula has a certain charm to it.
  3. One of the better replies I've ever heard come from a corpse.....
  4. hhhmmmm.... of the two I'd say Bruce Cambell. Ya know, this thread just wouldn't be right without the puns. You wiseacres really crack me up!
  5. This one is pretty ratty. From the not-so famous 'Baggs' pedigree! Hey, how do you think the monster scratches himself?!
  6. I've just become familiar with Maneely's work only recently and was not aware that he was killed. Can you or anyone elaborate on the circumstances? Jayman- I have heard two stories. 1. He was hit by a train while driving. 2. He was at an Atlas office party, forgot his glasses, and was killed by a train by taking a mistep or something. (Fell off maybe? ) Of the two stories, the second one I have heard more often. Either way there was atrain involved. Yuck.
  7. Off the top of my head Atlas published over 700 pre-code horror comics!
  8. I heard he was very fast. Do you know if he did more pre-code art than the others during the horror years?
  9. Yes. What are his best covers? I hadn't heard of Maneely until yesterday. There was a conversation about him in Comics General. Ol' buddy Scrooge, I probably won't be able to say why you don't have much of a yen for Maneely. I learned a long time ago that art is a matter of taste. If you don't like him, that doesn't bother me, & I probably can't explain what you 'are missing.' For me though, I like the 'feel' of his horror work. I see details & shadows, & these create a certain 'ambience' that I like. Not every cover is a gem, he was reportedly a fast worker churning out Atlas product quickly, & sometimes that shows. When he's on though, he seems to capture that quintessential Atlas 'tone' just about as well or better than anyone else. Here's a few good ones off the top of my head, all of which I think have been posted here to date: Astonishing 30 & 34 Marvel Tales 129 Mystery Tales 12 (see Jayman's fabulous Big Apple copy)
  10. I really like Joe Maneely horror. I think he is generally under-appreciated.
  11. Jayman... did you have a b-day just a couple days ago!? Happy belated birthday, you child of October!
  12. Nope. You are correct, sir! The code was on the way in just a few issues.
  13. Check out the socks on the guy with the loafer. Would you buy a tonic from a guy with fangs and pointy ears?! Just fangs, maybe, but not in combination with those ears.
  14. Jayman, that is an awesome looking corpse-thingy by Maneely! Pretty cool that it's a Big Apple copy as well.
  15. I always thought they should have used those "13th Floor!" covers on issues numbered 13 myself.
  16. Atlas loved to use the title "13th Floor!" quite a bit.... here's another...
  17. Is it my imagination or is there a bookmark flying up into the air?!
  18. Sweet books! Thanks for joining the party! Hip, hip! Woot! Woot!
  19. Great books, Fuelie!!! I love the AIU #8 & #11, both high on my ACG hitlist! I gotta agree with POV, there is something about those "old house" covers that really draws me in! Hey man, I'd love to see you complete the AIU run! Go for it!
  20. Indeed it is! Here's another one for those among us that like to take "head" counts.....
  21. OK, OK. If you insist. Back to more traditional Halloween-time fare. There are many things I like about this cover. 1. Simply great art. 2. The gravestone on the right reads "R.I.P. MAT- WILS-" which is easily Matt Wilson. Anyone else find that extremely funny. Anyone else know a certain Matt Wilson? 3. "Blackout At Midnight!" Yeah. Been there. Done that. 4. Dude thinks hot chick is going to get down in a graveyard? 5. It's a nice copy!
