I have always bought them because I like them. And because I like them and kept them, just by accident, they have become pretty good investments…

One of the better issues from this era, IMO.
Very solid artwork and some pretty entertaining stories as well. Not my favorite cover, but still very well done with an interesting color scheme. Maroto's art on "Wolf Hunt" is pretty outstanding, and it doesn't hurt when you have Gonzalez, Ploog and Sutton (among others) backing you up.
Overall, a really solid issue which comes close to reaching the heights attained by issue #12---all that's really lacking here is another great story by Wally Wood.

    Vampirella #14- November 1971
According to the Warren Magazine Index:
    14. cover: Manuel Sanjulian (Nov. 1971)
                    1) Vampi’s Feary Tales: Ladies Of Misfortune [Tom Sutton] 1p   [frontis]
                    2) Vampirella: Isle Of The Huntress! [Archie Goodwin/Jose Gonzalez] 20p
                    3) The Wedding Gift [Nicola Cuti/Mike Ploog] 7p
                    4) The Sword Of Light [Sam Glanzman] 9p
                    5) Deadman’s Treasure! [Lynn Marron/Tom Sutton] 9p
                    6) Vampi’s Flames: Doug Moench Profile/The Crimson Heel!/The Prisoner/The Entity/The Last Blast! [Doug Moench, Fuat Ulus, Ron Lovett, John Kaska & Dan McGee/Cara Shorman, Robert Shugrue, Jose Munoz, Vivian Jane Amick & Glen Abrams] 2p   [text article/stories]
                    7) Wolf Hunt [Joe Wehrle/Esteban Maroto] 7p
Notes: Great issue!  True, the Vampirella story was no great shakes (but then, they rarely were) but the rest of the issue was dazzling.  Sanjulian’s cover was one of the best of the early Vampirella run.  Esteban Maroto made his first Warren appearance (and it’s a beaut!) in ‘Wolf Hunt’.  Mike Ploog illustrated a darn good Cuti story.  The legendary Sam Glanzman turned in his only Warren work and it’s a fine, fine job!  Lynn Marron made her professional debut with a solid story and Tom Sutton, who probably illustrated more stories by first time writers than anyone else at Warren, provided her with an equally solid art job.  Another South American pro, this time the great Jose Munoz, saw his sample art stuck on the fan page.

A few notes:  Since I'm taking over the post the weekly starting block duty until further notice, I'll hold off on my personal thoughts on the issue for about a day to see if any discussion happens, and to give the thread a bump.  I won't promise to be quite on the nose time-wise as @Axe Elf was, although I'll try very hard to get it posted before I go to bed Saturday nights.  And I'll start posting the images of my copies of the issues with the opener posts, rather than when I give my review.  Other than that, I'm open to any suggestions people have: this has always been a group project, and it should continue that way.  Here's hoping that Axe Elf will be back soon to take back over, we're still trying to figure out a way to contact him or his family.  On a very different note, I highly recommend getting some contact info out to some other boardies you trust, so if something like this does happen we have a better chance of finding out what's going on.
Sorry if some of that is a bit of a downer; let's move forward and enjoy this weeks issue!

Pretty cool! A coworker said to me yesterday, “Look, they have the Flash on the Coca-Cola cans in the vending machine!” I was surprised at this and took a look then told him it was Daredevil.

Jayman reacted to Readcomix in CLOSED -- Joe Sinnott's Personal Atlas Copies
Thread is now closed; thank you everyone! For those who would like to see my keepers from Joe Sinnott's personal copies, here they are. I kept the War run because its three consecutive high-grade, late-run issues; the Tell it to the Marines #4 because it's basically the last issue of Devil Dog Dugan; My Own romance and Quick Trigger Western for the late-career Matt Baker work, Battle Action #23 because that guy looks like the late Darren Carerra, friend and owner of the Comics Depot in Saratoga Spring, which was an awesome shop; a few classic covers and Battle Ground #1.
I don't know how much more of Joe's Atlas books I'll get a chance at; hoping for some more PCH and early post-code horror, but the intermediary is keeping the sci-fi and most pre-code war. We both doubt the Marvel books leave the family, certainly not anytime soon, though maybe some bronze eventually will be parted with. Just our guess.

A 9.4 sold for $450 recently, and GPA doesn’t show any sales data for the 2 9.8s. Classic Wrightson cover and tough to find in HG, book has been pretty hot the last few years…not real surprised.

I've been trying to identify a painter from the late 40s for Ace lately and that one may be the one I'm looking at.  The Ace comics prices in high grade for some of them been going nuts as evidenced by the monied freaks in the romance threads snatching them up and showing their wares.  A hint to any that wander over to this little corner of the forum is that you can find "first use" of many of those covers on the Ace love pulps (which were mostly edited by Wynn's wife).  Well, if you can find them "in grade".  They tend to be far cheaper but also beat down and kept even more poorly than the romance comics.
But Ace had painted covers on magazines like the ones above which I group as "women's true story/confessions mags," too. Ace switched to photo covers at some point in the early 50s like happened across all the magazine genres, but  some of the photo covers when you find them in good shape can have *great* girls (stories are fun, too).  None of these below are mine (but I'm sure I'll share my own examples of this type of magazine in here sometime, it's a genre that spanned the decades.  Ace was big into them but Goodman sold a boatload, too).  Excuse the spammery but I just grabbed a bunch of covers in a moment of interest and thought I'd share some good ones.  "Secrets" from Ace was the title I was looking at and I'm gonna show a bunch to demonstrate the crossover with the Ace comics covers.
These first couple aren't actually Ace but Merit out of Ohio (Jack Dinsmore) - they had Hot Dog as humor digest and maybe Funny Stories (?) which was girlie pulp adjacent.  Phil S-P at Galactic Central has this title as 1922-1923, but I've just found many later examples, so maybe I'll have to try and index it for him sometime.

How good is this?  I'd pick this up in a second for the right price or in good shape "The Devil's Needle - Confession of a Dope Fiend"

Anyways, Ace's Secrets 1936 to 2011.  That's one *very* successful magazine of a variety many don't think of when it comes to the history of U.S. periodicals. Those familiar with the Ace comics will see the same painters at work.  The artwork imo is a cut above a lot of what you'd find in the downmarket magazines

That last one is a straight stunner, woo! But the photo covers can be good, too.  You can't tell me these covers were meant for only women, no way, jose.

Great stuff.  One last one, a Goodman jobber.  If this doesn't scream "male gaze" I don't know what does

Ok, Not the sexiest of ASM issues, but it's the 1st appearance of Red-9!  Cool Spidey spotlight cover.  He uses that flashlight more on the covers than he does in the books!    I like the 1st app, plus with all of the Hobgoblin covers I have been getting some of the ones in between.  I now have 19 between 259-289 (#20 on the way, stay tuned!).  Here's ASM #264:
