  1. I thought that too. Like he's singing "I'm so ronery" or something.
  2. Even with a double cover, it's hard for me to get too excited about that book in HG. Not that I wouldn't mind owning one, but I'd rather put the c-notes towards tougher books.
  3. Wow, never seen that Jumbo before. So cool that there are still so many books you can stumble on and say "WTF is this!?" Really gives one even greater respect for the whole Gerber project. Nice pickup!
  4. Wow I want that Picture Parade! That gets classic cover status in my book.
  5. Yeah, it would seem so. How will this bode for the hobby? Now that Parrinno's dreams of cashing in on the funnybooks seem to be going up in smoke, it'll be interesting to see where his books will land. Will they pop up on ebay from time to time? Will occasional flipping help these books eventually achieve greater prices, or will they go for lower than any of us might anticipate? Should be interesting.....either way, my checkbook ain't big enough for most of the books in question.
  6. She's a Pepsi heir?? Somehow that's even more interesting to me than her comic collection..
  7. Wow, POV, well I can surely see why you passed on that Witches Tales on ebay I tipped ya off to! Looks like you did really well for yourself indeed. Sheesh, at $50 bucks a pop for those precodes, you can't go wrong. Like you say, it surely helps to know the dealer. Congrats on the many pickups! Hopefully next year I can be at SD and give you a little less elbow room!
  8. I dunno....it's a tough call. One the one hand, it may simply be that a large percentage of Eerie #1's made it to the slab factory quickly because of the book's desirability. I mean, it seems to me a more slab-worthy book in any grade than Eerie #2, know what I mean? So in the case of a book like this, i.e. one that's regularly in demand, the census may actually be a more accurate indicator of what's out there than it is on the non-key books.
  9. Right. Try to think outside of the box on this one, ok 'lok? PS Hope you made some nice pickups at SD. Right, but there is a difference between not making money and losing money. Opportunity lost and all that. I equate the squandered opportunity to earn over 1k as a loss of 1k. C'mon dude, surely you see what's lost here is not just "opportunity." Don't you run a comics empire!?!
  10. Right. Try to think outside of the box on this one, ok 'lok? PS Hope you made some nice pickups at SD.
  11. I guess we'll just have to look at this situation differently. You propose what seems to me a very narrow-minded business strategy, but hey, to each their own.
  12. In your example, I suppose I lost the PGA Masters tournament, because I didn't enter. As in I suppose I lost money on not selling the NA26, because I didn't have it. 1)You would've lost the tournament anyway. 2) You didn't have access to the book, but DTA did, and his (or whoever's) play resulted in no sale. Hence that's probably over 1k he could have in his pocket that isn't there. Apples and oranges, but I think you know that and are just trying to be difficult.
  13. If you don't sell the book, then you don't make any money. Isn't that a loss, that is to say, a loss of money that you could've had? I realize that consigners don't put any money out, but if you don't sell a book that you could have, that seems to constitute a financial loss to me.
  14. And btw, don't consignors LOSE money when they dont' sell consigned books? There's a hole in yer argument the size of Roseanne's keister.
  15. Well, that was the official story, but I never heard anyone with any direct ties to the affair confirm that tale. Even if it's a true tale, it's not unlikely that DTA was giving the book's owner advice ("stand firm, we'll break 'em, etc.") And if it is in fact true and DTA is totally uninvolved, well then just give the book's owner the turkey award. He'll never sell it now for what he could have.
  16. I think Scott (especially) and Harley deserve to share a special Eisner award for services to collecting! Congratulations to Ian. Marc Too bad we don't have a comics-related Golden Turkey award for DTA...
  17. Or maybe just one from DTA.... Yeah, looks like he's going to get a nasty burn out of all of this, no?
  18. Maybe he'll start a complete Marvel collection next week?
  19. Skybolt's raised some excellent points...my only counter would be that for the very tough books, grade is sometimes almost irrelevant (unless it's a xeroxed cover or something). I'd be interested in a copy of Blood is the Harvest, for example, in just about any grade. Or All Negro #1. You can't be picky when there's only a couple dozen floating around in the whole wide world. And just my two cents, but IMO the sign of a true collectible is when grade becomes a surprisingly minor factor in the desirability and/or purchase price. There was a beater of 'Tec #1 on ebay awhile back that went for big bucks. To me, it's things like that that are the "real" collectibles. I guess the same would be true for OA, though that's not a sandbox I play in very much. If another first folio of Shakespeare's plays were to pop up, I don't think anyone would give a rat's butt about quality of production or page gloss, know what I'm saying?
  20. Accidentally posted this in the Timely thread yesterday...just realized my error, so here we go! Just got this one in the mail, after a bit of a post office SNAFU. We should start a new thread, "post your child bitc$-slappin' covers!"
  21. All Negro 1: Gerber 9, I'd give it an 8 Suspense 3---Gerber 9, I'd give it a 7
  22. I think Paull's conclusions here are pretty accurate, and it would seem to me that a readjustment of the scarcity rating would be pretty simple in most cases. Most books would likely get bumped one notch "less scarce" than they already are. That's the math I do in my head already anwyways when considering picking up something new.
  23. Sweet book! One that I haven't scooped up yet...I'm jealous! Every so often I hear this rumor that Geppi has a full box of this book in highgrade, but it's probably bunk.
