The apparent disconnect between the monster prices heritage seems to achieve regularly and the consignor disappointments is interesting. Probably a combination of the massive juice and maybe some unrealistic expectations?

I have never consigned with them and have a pile of art I was going to send them in January. You guys are giving me second thoughts!

Disconnect is the word I wish I used in creating this thread.   Is the disconnect simply that a lot of items are actually sold without much gain or even a loss - but we pay so much attention to items like 'master race' and vintage spidey covers that we miss what's going on at other things?

Does this disconnect exist as much at clink which is less celebrated than HA?

  2. In the recently released Felix comic podcast with Gene Park (THANK YOU!) - the issue of selling at auction was discussed and both folks agreed that the auctions went only 'ok'.  Now this contrasted with Gene's comment at the start of the podcast that pointed out how the market is hot and especially at HA.

Hence this thread - did Felix and Gene have Ok results instead of steller results because we often look at the selling price with juice as buyers - instead of what the seller gets? Were there other factors? Or is their experience not the average.?  Personally I didn't get great results with them when I tried using them a while back. This put me inthe same boat as the guys on the podcast.

Would love to hear thoughts and experiences from others who may have tried selling in the past couple years.

There are some nice pieces flying under the radar in this auction. I have my eye on one Spidey piece in particular that would look pretty swell framed!

I don4 think its flying under anything. I might be looking at that art myself.:baiting:but it will be a 3rd guy that gets it.

I am on board with the interest in the original art underneath production stats.  And, I wonder about the durability of digital files that record the actual final production art (before restoration).

Nothing is forever, and there are some trade offs.  David

I guess if you are worried about digital files you can print out copies and stash them somewhere (possibly with the original art). But realistically - the digital info is likely to outlast the art.

Just wondering what the appropriate timeline is for starting it.  I always find it interesting to see who is looking for what and then the follow-up on how they did.

Well - there still is clink and comic connect. And hopefully some art rep sales.   but - you can start now. Is your goal to get more peanuts art?

Would that really work though?  I can see it working by 10% or 20%, as in if I was only willing to spend $1K on a page, and the artist shilled an example auction up to $1,200.  I might consider bidding $1,200 or $1,300 next time just to get an example.

$25K seems out of range (and I don't know the artist).  If someone was only willing to spend $5K, would they all of a sudden start bidding $25K due to one example? I think they are more likely to tune out and use the $5K budget on other art.  If I had $25K to spend, I would rather buy 5 McFarlane Batman pages instead...

    Malvin

Yeah - but it creates buzz and may make 5k pages seem like a great deal and help increase # of sales , even if not page prices. 5k euro is still a big chunk of change for most collectors. If we see this appear on a 2d gallery or CAF page with a regular collector - it might put this conspiracy to rest.

  7. Love a the opinions.

Going into this - I knew there were risks and it was impossible to know the outcome ahead of time. To avoid contraversy, I could have hidden the original - and most wouldn't remember it. (I think the art used to belong to Doc Shaner?)  The point is - this is an interesting part of the hobby and I am happy to share the results for others considering getting restoration done.

Ultimately I wanted to see the art below the stat.  Some guy in an office decided to paste a stat over top of some nice art.  I imagine the artist may have been involved in the 'cover up'  but who knows?. Just the idea that Robert Dennis could remove liquid paper to reveal the art - its like archeology. In the end it's still very close to the printed version and it is the art that was used to print the comic. The art was mechanically modified for printing - but this is the actual art. The stat still exists - so when this art eventually goes to another collector one day in the far future - the option to cover the art will remain. In the mean time we can all see what the artist did left to his own devices.

In modern comic art - computers are used to modify art - so the practice of restoration will likely remain for vintage art.

    More comments/ideas regarding restoration welcome

You're not alone with that theory.  That was my first thought too.

Any guesses on what caused these 2 Batman/Catwoman pages to go for 4-6 K on Saturday? (Same price as a McFarlane Detective page!)  I was watching and was floored by the hammer.

Is there someone with deep pockets actively looking for Catwoman art??! :fear:(...please god, no!)

nice pages for sure. have not studied the market. have you looked at previous sales (if any ) to see if there is any precedent/pattern?

The art and story were amazing in the book! And he has all of the other pages from the book. So that may be why the high price? But it defies any logic to me.

just a conspiracy theory -but what if he had the art put in and had someone bid it up to make the art more valuable so he could sell the rest? totally made up theory, with no backing. just throwing it out there. if someone knows the consignor, feel free to debunk.

  10. Not sure if anyone has tried it - but if there is a thrift store near you -  they often sell framed art for less than the cost of framing.  It's not too hard to take out the art and put in your art.  Just an idea for anyone trying to budget. One other positive- some old frames are quite cool - so you can find some unique options. For me - finding a cool frame is often the primary interest as the  big box guys have limited options.

I  think his art looks like it would work best in a kid’s coloring book.

Nothing wrong with that, if that’s your preference.

You are right - but I think that's cool.  My interest in comics started with cartoons.  I never collected jla. I did watch super friends and other similar shows.  To have that kind of art with matching banter in comic art - is what I find so fun about it. Clearly it inspired the cartoons.  Doesn't mean I dont also love Adams, Miller, Byrne, Buscema and many other hero artists. It's all about the kind of stories you like.  Many Europeans love asterix, tin tin, disney etc.. all stuff aimed at kids. As adult collectors- we love that stuff we grew up with. Unlike the fine art world - we dont buy what others think is good or important. We buy what we enjoy and try and not judge others for their tastes.

It's a Green Arrow swear word.  Although I have to admit I don't remember if it's from JLA or the GL/GA title.  I was going off your appreciation of dialogue.

    Got it thanks.

The recent posts by RGL selling this stuff got me reading all the pages - some were very tempting for the dialogue.

Very nice! Your enthusiasm here on the boards got me following this stuff. In my mind eye - I could imagine collecting this stuff too. Lots of wisdom in these strips. Life lessons.  Have you given any thought to changing you cgc name to schultz fan or peppermintpattyfan or some other such descriptive.
