I get that. If you look at some of Sekowsky's art, the position of body parts or location of characters in the scene defy the rules of physics or anatomy. But that seems delibertately stylized. I don't recall it much with Dillion.

That JLA page which was posted by Panelfan is a hoot. I'd be tempted to buy it for the dialog. What's Black Canary doing? Using a soldering iron on a desk terminal?

the dialogue is a very big attraction to pages by Dillin.

Yeah, I’d like to know as well.

IMO, his art is reminiscent of an art school student trying to make it. So this is particularly baffling.

Marini prices for european art seem to be around 5k euro and up.  here in north america, you might recall his work back in the day featured by heavy metal. Raptors and Gypsy were 2 of his stories. I enjoyed both - but Gypsy -especially was cool for akira fans -as aped the style of that movie with all new characters.  his recent work is Scorpion (an english translation has been released for some of it). included some images below.

If you are talking about the Pop Up ads that read like spam ads that you usually are more likely to get it if you go to a prom site then yes. Ads similar to “You’ve just one a new iPhone click here!” I’ve had it happen twice in the last two days or so. I originally thought maybe I had another site or something opened in the background but that’s not the case.

Hope this is just a fluke otherwise I agree and probably won’t really visit the site much if it pops up too frequently...and yes I have a premium membership and get these ads.

For anyone who cares - you can install adblocker pro (find it on google) - it works on phones and desktops and eliminates tons of ads including pop ups. You can disable them for sites you want to support.

  4. Saw this tonight on comiccon art and was curious how everyone else felt about it. This is for Mikel Janin Batman covers/art.

under the topic of 'original' art covers - they are selling one of a kind prints.

you can see it all HERE

    the description reads:

While Mikel occassionally draws select pieces by hand whenever time allows, the vast majority of his work is digital.  As a result, his original interior artwork offered here consists of a unique original print of the final production file for each published page.  The artwork is annotated by hand, and is signed & numbered ("1/1") by Mikel along the bottom edge and accompanied by our Certificate of Authenticity.  In addition, Mikel's digital covers are available as a large format (18 x 24) full color fine art giclee print suitable for framing.  Cover monoprints are also signed and numbered ("1/1"), and issued with accompanying dual-signed COA.

Of the 25 items I am tracking, 22 are ridiculously under FMV (some as much as 10X+ less than reasonable FMV).  The other 3 are about 1/5 to 1/3 FMV.   I also see 97 items at bids at $55 or less, including over 20 items at $0 or $1.  While everything will align much closer in live bidding, I don't recall prices this low at this stage of the bidding.

I agree with batman fan. Not everyone bids early. There is little advantage in this - unless you plan to overpay and want to scare some folks off. In my case - I like to bid at the live auction.  Not before.  If others are doing this - prices now mean nothing.

  6. Austin Briggs did newspaper comics like Flash Gordon.  You can see a bunch of stuff HERE

Below is a huge prelim that Illustration House had at sdcc for some illustration art. What I liked about this piece is that although it's likely an image of a family of young girls walking across the page - it could also be interpreted as a time lapse of the girl growing older. Kind of lik that famous evolution drawing of man evolving from an amoebas to lizard to ape etc..

He also did great work which was not family related. I still remember one where a nurse came running out of the delivery room to the waiting room in a hospital shouting "It's a baby!". Makes you wonder what else they were delivering there.

actually fred Taraba had a non-family piece at sdcc that was from a consignor. might still be available - it featured a dinosaurs.  wish I had a pic to share.

  8. so it's not by Addams, but posted a new piece to my gallery today - in the spirit of Halloween- a take on the addams family by cartoonist brett bean. I also have an addams - addams family illustration in my gallery HERE.

The Bean art can be found HERE.

I think this is different - as the uh on the cover is it was for and it's like a giant birthday card. Better as a historical pie e, than a piece of art.

    This...from Vulture.com...

It wasn’t the bold story that made “Master Race” so revolutionary — although the Holocaust was only ten years in the past and rarely spoken of. It was how Krigstein told the tale, using repeated panels, fractured images and expressionist anatomy to capture Reissman’s panic and dark deeds, and to break down time into fragmented, strobe-light-esque instants. Although today these devices are established comics vocabulary, they were utterly revolutionary in their time and inspired countless artists who came after to experiment with their own storytelling. Or as Spiegelman put it in the New Yorker, “Krigstein began to vibrate with the inner language of comics, to understand that its essence lay in the ‘breakdowns,’ the box-to-box exposition that breaks moments of time down into spatial units.” Krigstein never drew another story with the impact of this one, but he didn’t need to.

Thanks for that.  Basically I didn't appreciate it as special because everything it did has been done thousands of times over since then. Context is appreciated and I can see why others care.

Now as a comic art  collector - I would like to say that buying art for context (which is normal in fine art) is not for me.  I buy art that I love - not because others think it's important.  I buy with my heart, not with my brain (read into that what you will.) My love of art is based both on technique and nostalgia.  As a more modern collector I neither have nostalgia for this art - nor do I love the style.  My primary focus in comic art is superheroes - but I also enjoy 30s to 60s illustration art. In all cases I don't collect 'serious' subject matter - preferring action or whimsy to 'deep' stories.

Having said all that - I think work like this should have a long life - with fans of indy or serious works (vertigo readers and such..) who may buy this because they love it and not - because someone tells them they should love it.

  11. So I was redirected here via the Felix podcast  thread.  I read all 4 pages - no one has explained what is so important about this story.  Famous people like it. So what? If anyone truly understands WHY this is significant - I really want to know.  I read it and liked it - but don't feel much about it. As I said in the other thread. Feels a lot like an Eisner story. I like Eisner - but again - people are making a big deal about this one and I just don't get why.  The art is good but not much better than other art of it's time. The story discusses the horrors of ww2 - but is that the reason people think its important?

Feel free to explain if you know the reason.

  12. So with apologies to those who know a lot more than I what is the significance of the Master Race art? I tried to look online to figure it out - but having found nothing, I return to the knowledgeable folks here. I did find the story and read it.  Not clear why it's important though.  Did it influence certain things/creators in any direct way?

I know the story itself reminded me of an Eisner short story about a criminal that was obsessed so much with being discovered that he ended up killing himself by accident.  Still - would love info from someone who can add context.  If it's simply a famous ec comics story - ok. But from Felix's interview I got the sense that it was more than that.
