GRADE IS IN: Comedy Comics 20 (hitler cover)
scburdet replied to gadzukes's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
I was wavering between 3.0±0.5. My personal inclination is to downgrade things with pieces missing a lot more than CGC seems to. There was at least 1 Green Lantern comic in the most recent contest that had a bigger piece out of a corner, and if memory serves, was 3.5 or something. -
I had two small tape pulls (one I never should have missed, the other quite minor) on the back of an otherwise 8.0-9.0, and it was down to a 7.0. I'd judge this to be at least 10× the area of damage. I would put this at a 4.5/5.0 now. So definitely closer to 7.0 than 9.0, but also closer to 6.0 and 4.0. Not to defend them really, but they must be pressing 100s of books every day and even under ideal circumstances there's bound to be some failure rate. I've definitely been fortunate with the sig series w/CCS I've done, although I suspect two staple detachments happened during pressing. Perhaps they were weak already, which is fine. I expect the guy I'm using for regular submission to alert me if a books isn't a good pressing candidate and I don't think CCS is doing that. I've also decided not to send CCS any high value books, particularly older ones. I'll leave the ones were I could lose hundreds of dollars to someone I can actually see and talk to. Tough break on this one. It was a very sharp book. I guess it still looks mostly OK from the front.

The grade is in!!! - PGM Sensation Comics #47
scburdet replied to Odda's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
Very nice. Do I see a chip out of the top edge on the back and some tearing around the bottom staple? My first though was the front could be in the 7.5/7.0 range with the slight creasing & rounded corners. Maybe down to 6.5/6.0 with the back cover, but my calibration on GA grading is terrible. In my limited recent experience, they often come back higher than I expect. -
Looks like some tears around the top staple too? Water stains set my maximum around 6.0, and then move down from there based on the other defects. It seems like the small tears & creases are going to knock this down a bit more. 5.0±0.5. I love me some Kirby too, as the cover photo on my profile will attest. I'd like to see Kirby et al get some of the love/credit that Stan Lee hoovered up over the years. I think it's clear the Lee was able to refine his colleagues ideas and market them well. No doubt that was important to making Marvel what it is today, but without Kirby, I doubt we have nearly the same creative output.

PGM Man-Thing 2 (1974 Series)
scburdet replied to randostoyz's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
Might get a 7.0/7.5 with a C&P. I think that's overspray on the M in Marvel, which is a little strange since the overspray is on the bottom edge. If it's not overspray, drop the estimate by a grade. -
PGM Man-Thing 3 (1974 Series)
scburdet replied to randostoyz's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
4.0 on top of the creases & spine issues, that soiling on the back might clean off and bump it up bit. -

4.5 Looks like a pretty substantial printer's crease, but if it's not manufacturing, it could be lower -
How does tanning effect the grade?
scburdet replied to Brucescave's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
Currently, CGC is coming down hard on discoloration from what I've seen and heard. This looks pretty severe on the cover. Without tanning and pressed, you might be looking at 6.5±0.5, but I would subtract several grades just for the tanning. I'd be around a 4.5 and worried they'd go lower. -
PGM Adventure Comics #431
scburdet replied to ComicMarty's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
Maybe. I'm pro-C&P even if it's to improve the presentation or remove bends that aren't obvious. You want someone who's competent. I had two books return from CCS/CGC with detached staples in the notes and I have no recollection of detachments. I suspect pressing stressing weaker paper. Someone you're working iwth closely/personally might tell you not to risk pressing certain books. -

5.5±0.5. A 6.0 is a stretch as it appears there's some staining/soiling along edge of the back cover, bottom edge. CGC might hammer that and put it in the lower end. I have a 5.5 with minimal defects & a little more staining, which makes me think this could be a 5.0 by their standards. -

[Grade Is In] PGM Silver Surfer #14
scburdet replied to Wahoo88's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
Really nice except that one corner. I see what looks like an indention around Spider-Man's thigh, and maybe some other light non-color breaking creases. These all might be pressable. I'm really one the fence between 8.0 & 8.5 -
+1. I'd be a little surprised if pressing got to 4.5, but definitely 4.0

scburdet replied to Deutero's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
2.5/3.0-a shot in the dark. I think CGC has some strange standards for taping, so it's going to be a judgement call on what purpose it serves. https://www.cgccomics.com/news/article/3327/CGC-Modifies-Stance-on-Grading-Submissions-with-Tape/ -
Marvel Super Heroes 13 - MidLow
scburdet replied to burnsbabe's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
+1 I got a copy several years ago, and it was still too pricey back then to get a super high grade copy. Mine's around a 6.0/6.5. Plus, just finding these square bound books in high grade is challenging. Many took a beating worse than regular books it seems. If you get it graded, it will still look quite nice b/c that water stain is on the back. -

the stain is a killer. And the square bounds are structurally delicate, looks like maybe some splitting starting along the top of the spine? FC near the left hand appears to be the dark spots by the robot's hand. A good C&P might get to 4.5 & 5.0 wouldn't totally shock me depending on what's going on with the spine and those spots. I have a couple of 4.5s and I'd say this looks as good, maybe better in some respects, perhaps worse in others -
4.0/4.5ish pressed. The back cover is beyond where pressing will make huge improvements IMO, but it would make it look better. If comics are in this condition, they would need to be high-value books to be a good investment. According to GoCollect, FMV for this book in 9.6 is $50, which is just about the cost of grading/pressing/shipping.
