  1. Won a mixed Superman lot on eBay, and these were all in there. Almost all low-grade readers, but some sweet covers and stories in here. Lot price came out to $1.20 a book:
  2. These came in a lot buy I made - nothing new here, and I don't really collect them, but there is something neat about finding them out in the wild:
  3. Auction houses are rough - you can find some good deals sometimes, but they definitely nickel-and-dime you on everything. Online-only auctions with extra fees if you pay by credit card, buyer's premiums, the shipping. I won a lot from a local-ish (in-state) auction for $9 for about 7 books, and by the time it was said and done, my cost was over $30. I tend to stay away unless I know I'm scoring something big.
  4. Ha - I lucked out, there are still some hidey-holes to be found online, and I took a leap of faith that worked out big time... That second batch was all one lot purchase!
  5. Not the best condition on the Batman 497, but it was $1
  6. Super fun mid-week mail day! First, I won a weird little Superman lot on eBay - 47 books for $56 shipped - that included some DCU logo books, some good stuff, some drek and some Silver/Bronze Age including a couple of Superboys signed by artist James Sherman. The Silver Age stuff is pretty beat up, but at $1.20 average cost per book, I can't complain too much, it's great reading material! Next, I had this fun little batch of books show up: And finally, this also showed up:
  7. How has your overall experience been with HipComics? I'm intrigued, and I signed up for a free account. It looks like it's a monthly fee to sell and then a 9% final sale fee? Is the shipping as seamless as eBay?
  8. I have 2 5.5's that have pretty significant sub creases, unsure if they were ever pressed:
  9. Finally got a copy of Cherry Poptart - wanted one for a long time just for the novelty of it but never pulled the trigger. I remember seeing ads for Cherry in American Entertainment Catalog (I think?) when I was a kid/teen - always loved looking at the section with Milo Manara, Bettie Page, Cherry, etc. back then for hours...
  10. I've had some smaller wins - nothing crazy major, but I hunt a lot online, at flea markets, small shows, etc. The hunting is probably my favorite part of the hobby. Got 2 copies of ASM 361 2nd print at a flea market last year for $2 each and sold one a couple of months ago for $120. Got a really high grade Batman 635 (first Jason Todd as Red Hood) for basically $1.35 - it was in a 130-book lot I won on eBay for $175, that included the Year One run, the full Hush run, and a bunch of other decent-ish stuff. Actually, out of the 130 books I kept about 50 and traded the rest/drek to an LCS for like $30 in store credit, so I guess technically I paid $145 for 50 books, but that's still less than $3/book. Bought a bunch of early TMNT last year too, including paying $2 for a nice copy of TMNT 47 (First Space Usagi). I find a lot of books at shows and flea markets that cost me around $2-5 each that I end up selling for $25-50, like I've found multiple copies of ASM 359 in the $2-3 dollar range and just sold one this week for $25. It's time-consuming, but it's a fun way to enjoy the hobby and pay for bigger purchases that I want. There are still deals out there to hunt - I actually just won a Superman auction lot on eBay tonight - paid $26 (plus $30 shipping, ouch!). So $56 total for 47 books, including 2 copies of Superman 4 (first Bloodsport - 1 direct and 1 newsstand) and a bunch of Silver Age World's Finest and Lois Lane books. Pics were awful so we'll see how the condition is, but at $1.25 a book it was worth the gamble I think. It was just one of those stumble-upon auctions that aren't very well listed and have no descriptions, I just noticed the books in the pics. I was one of only 3 bidders, and it looks like the person before me made their bid a little over 3 hours before the auction ended.
  11. Got a couple of fairly inexpensive eBay wins: Super excited (no pun intended) to get this one from @SuperBird - I had it when I was around 12-13 and lost it, and it's a story/comic I've been looking for ever since, but couldn't remember enough to identify the issue or title (I thought it was a World's Finest this whole time): And here's one I wish I had back in those days, but at least I got one now: \
  12. Wow! I just made a thread about this here: https://www.cgccomics.com/boards/topic/497271-share-your-books-that-you-feel-are-undergraded/ because I was curious as to others' experiences. I own two books that look way better than these that received lower grades, where the main culprit must have been sunshadow, unless something else is going on. That 8.5 pedigree Flash is crazy compared to my Batman 244 that I posted in that linked thread. I'll post the pics here too for comparison. Maybe there's something internal on my 244, but if it were that egregious, you'd think it'd be noted:
  13. As a caveat - I'm not trying to call out CGC or be disrespectful. We've accepted them as an authority in grading, and I recognize that I'm not, which is why I buy CGC slabbed key books. I was just inspired by this recent thread (https://www.cgccomics.com/boards/topic/442575-incredible-hulk-3-with-stain-on-cover/#comments), in which a severely stained Hulk 3 still got a 3.5. I personally own a couple of Batman books - 181 and 244 - that present well above their grade in my opinion. I fully admit that I could be wrong and these deserve the exact grade they received; I'm just sharing that in my opinion, they look better - for example, comparing the 3.0 copy of Batman 181 below to the 3.5 graded Hulk 3 in the linked thread. So I thought it might be fun/instructive to share these and also to see your books that you feel are undergraded and why. Here are my books I referenced: 181 Front : 181 Back 244 Front 244 Back
  14. I read the first couple of Nice House on the Lake before deciding to just wait until I had them all, so that will be awhile. Also haven't read any of The Joker series yet, it's just piling up for now. To this point, I had every cover on my pull list (probably dumb), but I'm just going to get one copy going forward...
  15. I wasn't going to weigh in but I've made a lot of purchases at flea markets, comic shows, etc. that I've posted on these boards, where I paid far less than FMV for a book. In fact, that's a large part of the "thrill of the hunt." I went to a flea market a few months ago where I paid $65 for 16 books that were probably worth more than $65. Here's the link: At the flea market, the guy had nothing priced, so I did my pulls and I took my stack to him, and he gave me a price. When he said $65, I felt that my obligation at that moment was to dig out my wallet and pay the man. I've been to plenty of places where they had nothing marked and I made a pull stack and they asked for ridiculous prices too. Had I not done my research, maybe I'd have bought them. Had I paid inflated prices to a dealer, is that my fault for not knowing the value of my purchases, or theirs for trying to get top dollar? It's subjective. I think that you were in the same boat when the guy told you what he wanted. Maybe your "sin" was scalping from the LCS, but who knows what they would have offered in the same situation? I wouldn't lose sleep if I were you. Maybe in the future you can pick and choose your timing, but aside from that, congrats on the books.
  16. I don't understand how a stain like that combined with the other issues gets a 3.5, but sunshadow seemingly hammers the grades on books... I mean, congrats to the OP, it's a cool book no doubt... but how is that a 3.5 and this is a 3.0 (this book has very slight sunshadow on the edge of the back cover, I didn't feel like pulling it out for a pic right now):
  17. Always felt like this cover is underrated. You can find it really cheap - I paid less than $13 on an eBay auction - and I just love the pose, coloring, etc. (Also, I think I need to clean my scanner, those specs are dirt on the scanner - yuck.)
  18. Got this one from @GACollectibles - great slab, great price, great packing and shipped quick - thank you! Also won a couple of late-night eBay auctions on some nice Supes for a nice price:
  19. I had a non-payer recently, had to wait until the allowed payment period was up and then I could relist. A few days later, I got a message from eBay that they were waiving all fees on my next three sales to make up for the non-payment issue I got hit with - turned out pretty nice, my next three were about $400 combined. Not sure what triggers that response, but I was happy with it.
