  1. similar story, not in comics but in hockey cards ... 12 year old me just loved this new superstar who arrived as an 18-year old Wayne Gretzky in 1980. We all played the "hockey card" game back then, fling your cards from distance at a wall and closest one wins all the cards (did you Americans do the same with baseball cards I wonder?). Not good for your corners if you are hoping for an O-Pee-chee 79/80 card to go up into stratospheric values in 2021. Of course, no one thought of these things, but I knew I wasn't going to lose my pristine card of my new found hero Mr. Gretzky, so it always stayed in my shoe box of hockey cards. So jump forward to 2021 and it's worth $30K+ now (?). And of course I still have it, and was actually able to meet him in 2013 , a thrill! I want to say I was a 12-year old collecting genius, but I wasn't. It was pure love and joy. I came into comics around the same time, specifically Spiderman. AF15 wasn't just out of reach then for me, I didn't even know of the book. I thought ASM#1 was the first Spidey. AF#15 I had to buy at a premium compared to the 15cents off the shelf in 1962. Big money in 2006/07, but still not like what I'd have to pay now. Buy still was purchased out of a 12-year old's love and joy of Spidey.
  2. All I can add is, do you know how many people out there would think that us here should be committed for even spending a thousand dollars on a comic book --- and thousands, or even millions ??!!! They would laugh and guffaw at us for eternity ! Punk rock music ?? How many just laugh at this being actual "music" ?? Norwegian Death Metal ?? What, are you kidding me ?! It's f****g noise man !! and on and on it goes ....... but those that are "into" these things just get it, it is "their" thing -- that's all.
  3. I got the 2nd one (was it '80 or '81 ?) from my local tuck shop off the stand, but the first one was just before my awareness of comics started . I did purchase it as a companion to my bought one years later, of course
  4. late 170's issues is where my ground floor for collecting comics was, as an 11-year old.....This run to about issue 225 is very special to me.
  5. I could answer "Action #1" , or "Detective #27", but I have to answer this from my 13 year-old self point of view and say Amazing Spider Man #1 ... I know this is a GA thread, and I assume Chicago Boy wanted GA book answers, but you have to understand how out of reach a book like that was for me at the time (around '79/'80), and how much I loved ASM comics at that age (ps never even knew that there was such a thing as an AF#15 at that age)
  6. sorry, but did some of them actually have a "Steve Ditko" signing inside the book
  7. I love the way you throw All-Select in there, like it's just another run like the others ............. HUUUUUGE !!!
  8. Awesome !!! welcome here young man ............
  9. hope you hung onto all those treasures .......
  10. soon to be 54 ...... but I have really slowed down in terms of collecting, I went crazy 2005-2015 and got what I wanted (although do we ever have everything we really want in this hobby?).... will buy stuff that is cool and interesting if I see it here, or in auction, etc.
  11. This is just me, but I would keep the two as is -- I definitely wouldn't trade a 2.0 and a 2.5 for one 4.5 or 5.0 . I'd rather have two of this major key, and "just in case" you wanted/needed to shore up some cash, you could use one for that and still have one as a keeper.
  12. congrats !! from what I can see, a very nice presenting 0.5
  13. agree with everyone here ... 1.0 seems right, 1.5 would be a bonus DO IT!! MANNUP !!
  14. all good friend, just trying to encourage our fellow owners to POST and brag .... let's go guys and gals !! How about an OO who bought off the rack !!???? That would be crazy to hear from someone like that .............
  15. Well, what I guess I'm really saying is, I would like more posts in this thread from former, current, or the best - new members - of the AF15 club. And I love seeing peoples books, and especially the stories behind how they got it and why. I love talking about and analyzing prices, but there seems to be more of this lately, and less of the spirit of what the thread should, and I believe was meant, to be by the original creator of the thread....... peace
  16. To me, this is a fantastic-looking 4.5 .... sorry, nothing wrong with this book.
  17. I LOVE and have loved Spiderman since I was about 9 years old - started with the cartoon and transitioned into the comics in the late 70's .... when I had funds, I bought not one, but THREE AF15's , because ..... just because I'm nuts. I have the first Spiderman!! I think about that about every 2 to 3 days all the time - my 10 year-old self is just so satisfied. Oh, they are also worth a MINT right now. But my very first GA books - a few Actions between 30-50, have barely moved in price in almost 15 years, but I still so LOVE them I'm saying, who really cares !? I'm a collector, I only buy what I absolutely love, and I happen to be paper (or off-white paper ) - rich at the moment, but I kinda care, but I kinda also don't care - at the moment anyway. Love FISH from the Great White North
