1939 NEWSSTAND PIC TIME MACHINE JOURNEY INTO THE PAST

Hi there! I'm looking for images to use in an upcoming documentary called Lost Heroes about Canadian comic book superheroes.

In particular we are looking for images that we can license from the rights-holders to set the mood for segments of the history.

If any of you are interesting in contributing any of your photos, or photos where you have an idea of who the rights-owners are that I can contact, please email me at nicholson.hope@gmail.com. You will be credited in the film and have our deepest appreciation.

In particular we are looking for images along these lines:

That show the "Hey Kids, Comics!" sign, in the original era

Children in the 1940s through 1970s reading comic books

Soldiers reading comic books

They don't have to be Canadian, since we're just looking to set the scene! We're wrapping editing in a week, so if you have anything you'd like to send in, please do as soon as you can

Here is a picture of Almond's Ice Cream Parlour in the English Bay part of Vancouver, British Columbia circa 1920:

Nice place to buy your ice cream, peanuts, popcorn and cigars anyway!

Posted this in Comics General earlier tonight.

Was going through some of my Aunts old photos looking for pics

of cars and motorcycles, etc. Found this one of a girl

(not my Aunt and she couldn't recall who this was) standing

in front of a store window.

Scan.jpeg

From replies and the keen eyes of some boardies,

here's the issues that appear in the window:

Life Magazine - July 20th 1942

Post - July 18th 1942

Esquire - July 1942

Gene Autry Comics 2

Famous Funnies 97

Real Heroes 6

True Comics 16

I shopped some of the color covers into the pic.

Great to see how they would have really looked!

Good job!

Thanks! Need to find out what the mag is directly behind

her. Can't make it out and it's bugging me! Want to finish

that part! Anyone know what mag it is??

Another store front pic from my Aunts photos.

No comics in the window. Looks like there's some on

a rack inside on the right, but can't make them out.

Check out the great Fawcett Magazine rack!

The gentleman in the photo is my Uncle Dan. A great guy!

Served as a Seabee in WWII. Passed about 5 years ago at the

age of 92! Was active and alert until the end. Hope

we're all as lucky!!

What's really cool is that the picture was taken during the United We Stand July 1942 period. You must know that most (all) magazine covers sported the flag. As such, the Smithsonian keeps a website with those so you can quickly scan the magazine in the hope to find that missing mag. I went through them all but didn't find a match though. At the very least, it gives you a list of magazine titles to search in the hope to finding a match.

here's another comic quiz if you have spare time after food, family, football and other festivities (shopping?) during thanksgiving week. a few of these pics have been posted before.

i'll post answers next week.

identify the comics in these set of pictures. you might have to zoom in to find the comics.

16166307-cef.jpg 2. in this nyc stand (nov 19 1935) that has been posted before, there is one comic.

Lucky I found this picture in the thread. Someone photoshoped a couple action 1s in it as I stumbled upon the picture on a website. Knew it was too good to be true :(

I'm guessing a Look magazine given its size and where it's placed by the Life and Post magazines. Have you checked Look magazines of the appropriate date?

???

Two issues of Look in July 1942. One has the flag, the other has Gary Cooper as Lou Gehrig.

Thanks for the info and the link, Scrooge!

I wasn't aware of the United We Stand July 1942 magazine promotion.

Knowing that now and looking at the pic. I can see that most of the mags

have flag covers and the United We Stand poster in the window.

My Uncle Dan in the pic was either on his way to enlist or was all ready

in and home on leave. Will have to ask my Aunt when he enlisted.

Very interesting info!! Really brings that pic to life!!!

I'd like folks opinion on the one between the Shadow and Thrilling Detective. It should be easy but it escapes me at the moment.

It's an issue Texas rangers ( though not the Dec. 39 issue). To the right of The Ghost is Rio Kid Western

In between the Western Trails is most likely an issue of Wings.

The 1952 Woolworths picture shows stacks of unopened packs of 1952 Topps baseball cards. This set contained the rookie cards for both Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays. The Mickey Mantle 1952 Topps card is generally considered the most important post-war card. This picture is tantamount to a 1938 photo showing piles of Action #1s on a newsstand. Quite a find.

Eight months late, but you gave me a challenge i couldn't resist once i saw it. I couldn't figure out what the heck the book to the left of the leftmost Western trails was though.
