Some folks, like Issa apparently, don't mind doing business with criminals. I find this especially true with collectors. The thinking seems to be "well I never got burned by Xxxxxx so why should I stop doing business with them?" and/or "if I can fill this hole in my collection at a decent price then I'm willing to run down my own mother if needed."

There are plenty of people right on these boards that have, are currently, and will in the future do business with criminals. Most try to keep it quite, while others have no problem talking about it openly. It just seems to be part of the collectors mentality with a lot of folks.

What's that statement Storms always makes, you'd buy books from the devil if he sold them cheaply enough.

Not me. :sumo:

Well hey....if he's a member of NOD and the price is cash or trade but not a soul...what's the big deal?

I'm sure even the Devil has a hobby.

All work and no play makes Mephistopheles a dull demon.

PQ will be a problem, though... hm

Maybe he's got a climate controlled room?

No reason the boss has to have the same work condition as the peons.

I purchased a number of CGC graded books, totally about $4,000 from Silver Age Comics. Each purchase I made from SilverAgeComics was completely random in every sense of the word. They simply happen to have the books I was looking for. When I bought his X-men#1 at NYCC, someone pointed to Gus by name and I turned to him and said, 'Hi, I'm the guy who picked up book XXX from you two weeks ago. Thanks!!" So, thankfully, everything has worked out for me with SilverAgeComics and I have no qualms about buying from them in the future.

As a side note: I do NOT buy RAW books online for a number of reasons. So, I cannot make any claims as to how well SAComics is with RAW books. Slabbed books, I have had ZERO problems.

Well, to each his own Issa, but as far as I am concerned this is about more than just a satisfactory transaction.

Greg Jortner is an absolute fraud. This is indisputable. If there were any question that a reasonable person could differ in opinion about this, I would never have created this thread.

Silver_Age_Comics/Gus continues to do business with Jortner despite unequivocally knowing about the fraudulent misrepresentations and unlawful transactions Jortner has engaged in, some of which were actually under the monocle of Silver_Age_Comics. If Gus' company doesn't have the ethical wherewithal to stop doing business with an individual such as this because financially it behooves them and means more than their reputation, then this is a company I would never ever consider doing business with, and I would hope others would take this into consideration before doing otherwise.

Whether dealer or collector, we complain about the fraud in our hobby, particularly on the Internet, and yet too many people allow the conduct to perpetuate because their individual transaction went smoothly. If we want things to change, if we want fraud minimized, then we need to be above the notion of "I want that book and don't care who is selling it", or "well, they treated me right so I have nothing to complain about."

Otherwise, there is no message sent and people like Gus and Jortner keep trodding along waiting for the next sucker to come along. It might be you one day. I hope not.

To get this thread somewhat back on point, let me at least make it clear to Issa that I hope my post was not construed as a personal attack. It certainly was not. I appreciate the fact that Issa even offered the comment because it is a perception shared, as noted by others above, by many and this provided an opportunity to comment for the larger community.

At the end of the day you have to each decide the course of conduct you wish to abide by and follow, and I hope this thread helps some people in reaching a determination at least with respect to Jortner and Silver_Age_Comics (though their conduct is unfortunately mimicked by others).

Good follow-up. I was wondering if some would view your initial comments as a personal attack -- though I did not perceive it as such.

:bump:

I wanted to give this thread a bump as I continue to receive calls/e-mails about transactions involving Jortner that have gone bad. I heard today from another collector who suffered a serious financial loss.

Apparently Jortner continues to also do business with mainstream dealers. If anyone knows of any such transactions I think it would behoove you to publicize it. As far as I am concerned there are times where it is legitimate to apply guilt by association (just look at our political elections today), particularly if the individual knows of the shenanigans that Jortner is pulling within our community.

I had an ad on Craigslist to sell some silver and bronze-age comics last fall. I got this e-mail.....

"Hello,

I am in Atlanta, I am a big collector and I want you entire collection...will pay cash or certified funds as early as tommorrow, wednesday......please call me at 203-273-6698 Greg (I work the deals) and my Atlanta partner is Dave (he will pick it up and inspect) 404-502-5944

Thanks,

Greg"

I met with the Atlanta guy Dave (ex-special forces operative) and he looked over my books and liked what he saw but they never pulled the trigger on the deal. After a week of phone calls and a second showing of the books I got sick and tired of dealing with them and I told them I was just going to keep the books. I got repeated phone calls but decided it was in my best interests to steer clear. They were a big waste of my time.

Jortner update:

I've been trying to get my money owed to me from Jortner since August 2007. You would not believe the number of lies that I was told along the way. Typical lies included "check is in the mail" or "I got this great silver age collection for you.". So I was shocked last week, when he called me and subsequently deposited slightly MORE than he owed me into my bank account after 11 months of dodging and evading.

Methinks that my good friend Mark Zaid deserves more than a little bit of recognition for the hard work in tracking down Jortner's multiple victims and getting everything organized for a possible court date. (worship)(worship)(worship)

I can think of no other reason why Jortner would finally make good on payment.
