Agreed on the textless Baker covers. His art told the story. Those prints are very nice by the by…
Darwination
The print was a surprise, one of those online companies was having a sale, so it was printed for about 60 bucks. It's definitely not perfect, some browns in white areas, etc,. but it's mostly consistent printing and you can see all the original comic printing patterns in the thing. I was working from a 400 dpi scan which worried me with blowing it up so big, but no problems whatsoever in that department. Point Five
Popular Post Darwination
I hesitate to even let the jackals know where to hunt these things, but I've been tracking Baker stuff down in the sweat magazines and digests for years. The sweat magazines were kind of a last refuge for some artists as the goldenage crumbled, and Baker still has some "lost" illustrations here or there. RAGE v01n03 (1957-04.Arnold) splash How Girl Gangs Fight and Love Matt Baker my copy: The last one I found Gunsmoke v01n01 1953-06 splash Rock Bottom Matt Baker my copy >< I've got a collection of all of his images from the St. John digests to go to the online museums, but I've been holding out for the last 3 issues with possible Baker work before completing the file... manetteska, Ricksneatstuff, Changer and 6 others

Baker has the art director credit on the first issue of Manhunt. I recall it was an off-shoot company of St John called Eagle Publishing. I've wanted to explore more of them, as there are other digest books with the same cover artist who did Teen-age Romances #27-30. I'd love to know that artists' identity. Those sweat magazines don't show up often.

Those sweat magazines don't show up often. As long as I'm spilling the beans - Manhunt (Flying Eagle is the company in the indicias on the digest) (Baker up through some point in the first year), Verdict (will attach a pic from that one - the Chandler issues are the ones I need but won't pay for), and Gunsmoke. I'm also told Baker art shows up in Nugget (also St. John). I looked through the second issue of Nugget and didn't notice but have some other issues in my boxes, thanks to the member that pointed out the possibility. It's really an exceptional mag - hope it's not against the rules to point to a scan of mine for the second issue: https://www.mediafire.com/file_premium/eomtaf8b2oa2zbp/Nugget_v01n02_%281956-02.Nugget%29_%28darwination-dpp%29.cbr/file Baker also worked in a number of Everett Arnold's sweat titles (those you'll have to research for yourself, as I still have ones I'm looking for), and I suspect you can find some of his art in the Goodman western pulps or magazines as well. The sweats used to be dirt cheap, as in - here's a stack of 10 for ten bucks. It's not quite that way anymore. MANY golden age artists carried on in the sweats (aka men's adventure magazines). Some of those are great reading btw, apart from any artistic merits (especially early on). I'm attaching a couple more Baker sweat splashes I've worked. Of course, Baker art just isn't the same if there's no girls involved... EdMann2
I did a check through the first few issues of Nugget this afternoon, and the only one I could find with Baker art was Vol. 1 # 1 (November 1955). There are at least three illustrations by him in there - including one for a story called "Swamp Fever".... I checked all the other issues up through Vol. 2 # 2 (March 1957) and didn't see any more of his work. Darwination and Yorick

I'm interested in picking a copy up as much to have v01n01 as for the Baker art (well, almost) but am a patient man. eBay killing the adult only section has made finding/listing such harmless publications more difficult :/
Darwination
This beauty is leaving my possession today. I think I was attracted to the luridness of some of these St. John issues (TEEN-AGE TEMPTATIONS???) even before I caught the Baker bug. I prefer Baker in a slightly different vein these days but do like this one. The poor girls do so get put through the ringer in goldenage romance.... Yorick
I snapped this pic from a book a REALLY nice boardie sent me... I love the way Baker put those panels together with Kate stepping "through" the borders to make the sequence carry forward.
