I think I've shared this before but here is what I believe to be the source picture of TLP 10.  It is from a source drawing book (Loomis)  that Baker was known to carry around with him.

How cool would it have been if Loomis did comic art?!  (way off topic)

Talk about money well spent.  This is the nicest copy I have seen so far.  Maybe someone has a better one they want to share?

I'd post mine, but the boards no longer seem to accept PB's image links.   Combine that with the constant slowdowns and timeouts, and things ain't too fun around here lately.:frown:

I think one of the most difficult issues that never did cross my path was the All Picture All True Love Story 2.  Wouldn't you know it showed up on ebay for $100 the other week but I didn't get it.

#2 does not look like Baker to me.  Girls face is close, but the guy...

The hands do not look Bakerish but maybe he contributed in some way.

This is a weird one- I have no idea how to grade it... (I'm open to suggestions)... the front cover is very high grade... but look at what has been chewed off the spine by a bunch of silverfish with very selective appetites... only the white paint has been eaten, and just off the surface, down to the glue... not down to the paper.

Here's a scan of my recent silverfish submission.  3.0 grade.  Tiny bit eaten off the spine top and a lot eaten off the bottom.  Looks great in a slab though!

Interesting.  I have a copy of that one, but I'm missing the first issue.  Astounding that it would show up on eBay at that price. Someone got quite a bargain.  I imagine it would have finished well north of $1,000 in an auction with Matt Baker in the title. Risk averse sellers sometimes get burned relying on BINs.

I think the cover is Baker, although inked in a peculiar way.

What do you think?  Think this is the source picture for CL25?  Linda Darnell

Great catch!

He changed the hair and angle of the head but I think that he was using Darnell and probably that photo (or a similar one) as the inspiration.

Towards the end of his career with St. John, Baker produced some of the covers we love best - but those issues also have the weakest interiors.  The Cinderella Loves are Ziff Davis stories inside; the Going Steadys have little or no Baker, and whatever Baker there is are reprints from earlier titles.

Believe it or not, pound for pound, the Teen-Age Diary Secrets 7 digest has more original Baker art than any other title/issue, by a wide margin - 61 pages.  Next in line is the Giant TLP 4, with 41 original Baker pages.

The sublime cover for Diary Secrets 16 (outstanding book Rick!), one of the very first full no dialogue covers, is actually a nuanced rework of an earlier splash from Wartime Romances 12.

The only "real" original owner romance collector (archivists like Church, Crippen, and Crowley don't fit the bill), of course a gal, was Nancy Wessner.  Over the course of 25 years I've seen her books surface here and there, and it's always a rush to see her easily recognized sig again.  She liked St. John and Fox, two interesting choices for a young girl, but she also bought across the board in the 50's.  No Charlton of course - Charlton has been universally shunned like an Amish with a taste for porn.

Here are some Nancy books (not my books, just grabbed screen shots).  If you have any Nancy's in nice shape, I'm a for real buyer.

Hi Joanna,

Figure Drawing for All It's Worth is still used as a resource for illustrators. I recommend it to the students in my storyboard workshop.

What's up with the photobucket problem?  Anyone know if this is just a temporary thing?  I'd hate to think that all the PB images I've posted over the years are now just dead links, for all time.

Great detective work, and thanks for sharing.

Part of what I love about Matt Baker's art is the fact that his best St. John covers are a slice of the American 50's, featuring girls with movie star looks, usually dressed in distinctive fashions of the moment. Linda Darnell had exactly the kind of look that Baker liked to give some of his women, especially the one on the sublime cover for Cinderella Love #25.

I've had to rescan any book that I have posted lately. Sucks, I have hundreds of books in PB.

Well, we can still save our PB scans to a new file, resize them if needed, and post them via the new "drag and drop" method... but that's still a lot of work.  I want to know why we have the option to "Insert other media", but PB url's won't work anymore!

Plus, they've apparently been changing the size limit on picture files we can post here.  Supposing one day they decide to arbitrarily reduce that size limit to something just below the size I decide to start using from now on... and once again, years of devoted effort simply vanish!  If this can happen... where's the motivation?
