I just got royally screwed by Silver Acre Comics!

cryptkeeper59 is being a bit too kind in his explanation .. I was with him all the way and I know what went down, basically Silver Acre lied to him throughout the whole deal trying to squeeze as much money out of him as possible.

I saw Silveracre had a piece of art for sale on eBay and alerted Deve as I knew he was looking for that kind of piece.

Piece had been up for a few days with a starting price of £995 and no bids.

Trouble was that Darryl didn't want paypal over a certain amount because this would eat into his profit.

cryptkeeper59 contacted Darryl to ask about alternative payment questions and they agreed that the page would be sold off-ebay for £1000, but Darryl didn't pull the ebay auction (shrug)

When cryptkeeper59 asked him to do so he asked for a downpayment (which I understand). This time he was willing to accept paypal (just for the downpayment)

Before the downpayment ever went through Darryl sent out another email telling cryptkeeper59 that the price of their deal had just gone up as he had "two other interested parties". All of a sudden paypal was good and cryptkeeper59 had a small window to quickly pay £1200 (nearly $400 more than what they agreed upon) or he would offer the page to the "other customers". There still were no bids on ebay and the auction had less than 24 hours to go.

cryptkeeper59 decided NOT to bend over and declined, but did send Darryl an email telling him how unethical he was going back on a deal and asking 20% more.

Strangely enough the two other parties that were so interested and offered more must have changed their minds as well, because after cryptkeeper59 declined, the auction still kept running on eBay for another 20 hours or so.

In the end it did get a bid and sold for £1050 or something.

I'm staying far, far away from Silveracre and their throw-ethics-out-of-the-window-for-the-sake-of-a-lousy-buck way of doing business

Sorry to hear the same happened to you Jeff :(

Seems like this guy just pulls one dickmove after another. Surprised it took this long for everything to finally come to a head.

It seems like Silveracre is nothing more than a greedy person_who_is_obnoxiously_self-impressed :sumo:

I hope that this post make many, many, many steer clear of any business transactions with him.

I'm sure it was well worth losing a bunch of high caliber customers for a quick buck.

dirt bag all the way!!!! Email sent! scanners.gif

Jeff, I agree that this is a low class, short-sided move by SAC. I'm sure they've lost many many potential buyers from this. But, at least you're not out any money and hopefully this means that a better book will come to you. Good luck.

:foryou:

Jeff, I'm sorry this happened to you. If it's any consolation, Silveracre is gonna lose a lot of business because of his underhanded tactics. Not only is he unethical, but he's a stupid businessman.

This really sucks, Deve is one of the nicest people that I've got to know on the boards (and I'm sure Jeff is a nice guy too) and he doesn't deserve to be jerked around like this. :censored:

I bought my Avengers # 1 from Darryl at Silveracre and I'll be sending my email to let him know that it will be the last book he sells me.

Making deals with people then backing out to try to get more money is inexcusable and there are plenty of better people to buy from.

Wonder if Darryl works Saturdays. Wonder what is going through his mind right now...

Wonder if he is going to change his tune....

I'm pretty sure that particular copy of Bat #1 has been in and out of Silver Acre stock for many years, as far back as the 1990s. That two collectors should be actually offering to buy it right at the same time is unusal but that is no excuse for a lapse in business ethics.

I had a small-time version happen to me. Some years ago I agreed a price with Daryl on the 'phone for a book, to be collected at a forthcoming mart. When I got there he told me it was sold just minutes earlier to someone who offered more than our agreed price. "And I knew you wouldn't go any higher" was what he said to me in almost or exactly those words. He was stood there, looking a bit hot and bothered, swigging from a large plastic water bottle and he shrugged and moved on to someone else who was waving books in his face.

I felt let down, too, but later found a CGC 9.4 copy of the book from another seller.

You don't need that particular copy of Batman #1.

Much harder for the dealer to restore his reputation!

Just reading my own post and thinking that I never make negative comments about anyone on these boards. I hate any kind of ganging up, whether deserved or not. I suppose what it boils down to is this. If any of us are wronged and the situation is not resolved, when we hear of a similar happening we get the urge to disclose our own similar experiences and grievances that have perhaps been bottled up for years, as a way of gettting them out of our system. Almost like a bit of group therapy!

Thanks for posting about the OA. I didn't know he deals in that too. I couldn't pretend to not buy comics from him as I no longer really buy them. However, I have spent more on OA in the past 12 months than the asking price of that Batman 1. I will definitely not engage in sales with someone overseas who pulls these types of transactions.
