Actually it's much easier than the ways shown to identify the different versions of that Crumb covered copy of The Realist. The copy I own looks like this, and has the words "The Realist presents" at the top left of the cover, which the others pictured above do not!

Looks like the issues pictured in that other photo with the Zaps are duplicates of the same version.

So, there's only the one printing of The Last Supplement (which is also issue #98 of The Realist, a mostly-not-comic underground tabloid magazine). But there are two versions of that one printing, one for normal sales, and one for subscribers. Check the box at the top-left on the back cover (not my copies, and ignore the difference in apparently background color between the two pics):

Normal sales:

Subscription copies are, anecdotally, much rarer:

They are both the same whole earth catalog version. Is this the more rare version?

I have certainly seen more of the general sales version than the subscription version. A lot of the sub copies are pretty grim, too. That one on the right looks quite nice

Now, my experiences with this book are anecdata and could just be sampling bias. In any case, I'm not sure there's an established value distinction between them.

Coincidentally, I got a copy of the book that shot is from yesterday.  (I assume it's this one, not the original, because of the facing page and I'm not in the mood to check my back issues right this moment.)

You are correct, Sir. Was too lazy to pull out the 1/72 Is Nothing Sacred? issue when BONL3 was easily accessible from the book shelf!!! All here should also note the Neal Adams front cover on that tasty specimen, as well!

That's why I grabbed it, given that I have all the issues it takes from. Also couldn't remember what issue had the original.

Yeah...it's funny that the cover of 1/72 mentions the Crumb connection, but not the Realist or actual title!

Thanks and yea one of them is defiantly better than the other. They were all down in a metal shop just stacked up in a drawer so grease and grime were prevalent for sure. Also a bunch of vintage mid 60's Girly Mags in there, that were in very nice shape, since they had their own box within the drawer.

RIP Simon Deitch

I can't say I'm familiar with Simon's work, unlike his father and brother.  What did he work on?

Also, my apologies to anybody who saw my reaction to the previous post the first few minutes it was there.  I intended "sad" but the boards decided to put up the laughing face for some reason.

Was just looking through the results of the most recent Heritage underground comic auctions - Lots of graded and ungraded books. Crumb, Pekar, Shelton, & many more.

Overall there was strong results for the Haight Ashbury books, Crumb sold well, higher grade file copies performed.

Where they sold multiples of the same book, the undercopies may have had value.

Buyer beware on QA/QC when it comes to some undergrounds as CGC can misidentify books.

Freak Brothers in high grade underperformed IMO, likely due to the underwhelming cartoon?

Finally, I missed a few opportunites to upgrade and I'm kinda bummed about that... most of my collecting funds are tied up by sneakers now

Caveat emptor! Would be bummed to get this (missing classic cover tell and obv indent from overlap)...

It hurt me to miss this book... should have been more aware and brought this back to Wisconsin
