I blame this one for my entire Timely GA collection.  I was working on the SA Sub-Mariner collection back in the mid-80's and saw this one behind the counter at the LCS, one of the original Lone Star (MCS) locations.  I asked the guy what it was, took a look at it, and bought it for $60.  Talk about a first domino.

Although these are all graded copies I've only posted one CGC grade as that one was iPad shot rather than scanned due to inner envelope glare and then color corrected to better fit what I was seeing in hand.

Note: Five Timelys and six Schomburg's out of the bunch ain't bad! :insane:

Have you guys seen this? It’s fascinating

I haven't seen this listing, but there's a collector on the boards who posted a thread focusing on foreign editions ...most titles from Brazil... awhile back.  I have no idea how rare these are, but undoubtably they're rare in anything besides low grade.  From my perspective, the most fascinating ones have covers featuring interactions between characters from different publishers.  Also, the costumes are probably amusing to U.S. collectors as the colors are often inconsistent.  In some cases costumes with tight apparel become bared legs and arms making the hero appear more like professional wrestlers in briefs (of course, it's warmer in South America, so heroes dress accordingly).

I'm curious as to whether there were licensed rights involved in these editions (all appear to be B&W) or simply international borders presented an opportunity for foreign language publishers during wartime.  At any rate, this is a very detailed swipe of Schomburg's cover for Marvel Mystery #40, the most noticeable difference being that the parachute is partially redrawn.  It's worth noting that the Brazilian publisher seemed to follow the color guidelines very closely on this one.

Yes no way was permission given for this Frankenstein.

That’s not Schomburg, right? It’s someone trying to copy Schomburg. The book behind this cover isn’t even remotely the same as it’s American counterpart, consisting instead of stories lifted from Pep and Superman, in addition to Timely.

the audacity of this swipe has got to be admired

I'm not absolutely sure that international licensing wasn't involved, but I doubt the artists who worked on the original American comics received payment or attribution.  If any rights money changed hands it was likely directed into the publisher's wallet.  The Brazilian artists seem to have taken a lot of liberties with the characters on other covers I've seen, not that they're all badly done.   That thread is quite interesting if you haven't seen it.  If I can find the link, I'll send you a PM. (thumbsu
