Not a Hitler cover but a part of the axis none the less.

That cover is something. Just about the end of the war and the Germans -- retreating from France, I guess -- are offering poisoned candy to kids!

It would be interesting to know if it was based on an actual incident being discussed in the news, as it may well have been.

Gertruda Babilinska was born in 1902 near Danzig, Poland. She worked for a rich Jewish family named Stolowitzky, caring for the two children. The father was taken to Auschwitz. Then the daughter died. Mrs. Stolowitzky thought Warsaw would be safer. Gertruda accompanied them to Warsaw and then to Vilna. Things were very bad. The Nazis gave poison candy to Jewish children, so Gertruda taught Mickey never to accept anything to eat. Mrs. Stolowitzky asked Gertruda to promise to take care of Mickey if anything happened to her.

Interesting ... and tragic.

Just found about this board and have been doing a lot of reading the past few weeks. Very enjoyable and informative!

Haven't seriously collected in over 20 years, but feel a relapse coming on, especially after reading the various threads here. I started to dabble in Timely and DC WWII covers before real life got in the way (damn, you food and shelter!). Anyway, being Japanese-American, I had a (morbid?) fascination with how the enemy Japanese were depicted.

One of my favorite covers, Action 58:

Hi Iani98, it’s great to have you here! Welcome to the CGC boards! :hi:

Why "morbid"? There are no particular reasons for this interest to be morbid.

Inversely, as an Italian I went on looking for stories where the italian army (or the Fascist party) is depicted in a not necessarily satiric way, but with little success.

Unlike german nazist and japanese army (which are often painted in frightening ways), italian army characters are often portrayed merely as humorous stereotypes.

Of course there are many reasons for this, but nonetheless it’s fascinating to see how each GA writer and artist approached the subject.

Charles Biro, which I quite admire, was somewhat gross in depicting japaneses on the pages of the Lev Gleason titles, but there are interesting stories indeed, even some involving reflections on the Second Sino-Japanese War.

Zip 30

It also features a great Zambini story by Paul Reinman and a Montana cover. But don't buy it because it isn't worth the money. Just walk away. Nothing to see here. These aren't the droids you were looking for. :P

Droids? lol

They are pretty expensive for me but I would like to have a #10-13 sequence of Zip some day. I need the Inferno storyline as I was dreaming of publishing some Biro stuff here in Italy.

I take the opportunity to ask: is the National Comics #18 you have incomplete? I saw you posted a group pic in the "missing parts" thread.

Thanks Vaillant! I half-jokingly say morbid as essentially, these wartime caricatures depict my family background. But I do find these WWII covers fascinating and humorous!

I was also looking for non-satiric books on the Japanese-American experience during the war and found one, EC's Frontline Combat 5, which featured a lead story on the 442nd (the famed Japanese-American combat unit). Anyone know of others?

Another of my favorite covers. Too bad about the tape, though...

Thanks for sharing the scans. (thumbs u I'm not aware of any other positive stories about the Japanese-American experience.
