Time to get back to this thread! :D

This is the italian edition of "Mickey Mouse on a secret mission" (serialized in US newspapers from July 19, 1943 to October 23, 1943). The story was left unpublished in Italy (for pretty obvious reasons lol ) until 1947, when it appeared on "Topolino Giornale", but this 1973 issue is the first (and only) album edition with an original cover, custom drawn by our great Disney artist Marco Rota.

I love this series, which published – albeit cut and in not-so-stellar quality – most of the classic Mickey stories in a filologic attempt. And I DO love this cover. ;)

Not a Hitler cover but a part of the axis none the less.

That cover is something. Just about the end of the war and the Germans -- retreating from France, I guess -- are offering poisoned candy to kids!

It would be interesting to know if it was based on an actual incident being discussed in the news, as it may well have been.

Gertruda Babilinska was born in 1902 near Danzig, Poland. She worked for a rich Jewish family named Stolowitzky, caring for the two children. The father was taken to Auschwitz. Then the daughter died. Mrs. Stolowitzky thought Warsaw would be safer. Gertruda accompanied them to Warsaw and then to Vilna. Things were very bad. The Nazis gave poison candy to Jewish children, so Gertruda taught Mickey never to accept anything to eat. Mrs. Stolowitzky asked Gertruda to promise to take care of Mickey if anything happened to her.
