Speculating on Moderns that are going to heat up BEFORE they ship THIS week.

591 posts in this topic

You think you're going to be able to sell Lady Mechanika for $4-$5 for a long time?

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I like Lady Mechanika as a book, the story, the art...I'm not buying it for speculative purposes, but rather for my own reading and collecting. I should have made that point. As to how well it will do long term, don't know.

My other point was just that I've seen Larry say that he will be able to sell certain books at $4-$5 for a long time. It was asked what kind of prices Larry uses as his basis for speculation, and I just relayed that.

Ok,

let me be crystal clear. When I speculate on a comic, I want to hit the ball out of the park every time. I want to pocket as much coin as humanly possible. I am arrogant & believe that I'm going to win every time. I speculate on moderns weekly & have done so for decades.

Every comic being a Morning Glories NEVER happens. Big winners are few and far between alot of .

However in my case can mean sellable, if not great comics.

I own a comic shop. ( I rarely charge above cover for moderns)

I run a comic show.

I set up at comic shows.

I have a comic website.

I wholesale to comic shops.

I sell on E-bay. ( I sell at the highest price possible)

I own a CGC grading business.

If a comic I speculate on is not a Morning Glories level hit, chances are its not a Ratchet & Clank level dog. It's still sellable to me.

If you do not have the outlets to sell like I do. Don't buy what I do.

I'm interested in hearing what others consider a "good buy" to make myself a better speculator.

( I just sold a 27 #1 on E-bay for $36) It look like it's going to be a good week.

Respectfully

I'm fond of JJ as well. The great part is that you completely missed his point. When a "hot" book is named well in advance, most of its "hotness" disappears. You may have an uptick in demand, but it's caused by speculators, not readers. In turn, when those speculators dump their books, the buyers are not necessarily there. Or, more simply, supply outstrips demand.

This depends if the picks/publicity come before or after final Diamond orders. Larry's come after. Not sure if 'Ain't It Cool' tends to write up books before or after orders are due. The other thing that matters is, it's one thing for an article to pimp a book as hot, it's quite another for a small comic shop with small margins to hang its :censored: out and order 20 copies or so.

This is the problem with this thread. You're unwilling to put any kind of metrics to your picks. You find successes in nearly all books because you buy them at a direct discount. Were you measuring the short term or long term back issue appeal of books, I think you would flounder even more. But no one knows, and you won't say, whether your picks are meant for cover price sales or backissue higher valuations.

Larry does this, I think. For a book like Hulk 25, he defined it as an extended shelf seller, for instance. Larry's metrics are different though, and need to be taken into account by anyone reading and buying based on this thread.

How so? Your auction terms say the item ships within 48 hours of payment. What if I win one and pay today? You weren't very clear that this is a pre-order.

The week it was released?

Way to go Larry, new readers will be gathering by the 1000s to get into comics now.

(just saw it was pre-release).

Off to find my ignore button, that's sickening!

To be honest the only series that to me seemed worth reading was Morning Glories. All others have been rubish to me and not worth picking up issue 2.

That's exactly how I gauge what will be "hot". I read it first. If it's awesome, I'll buy more and pick up the next issue (which is very rare). People are much more likely to like quality stuff today. It's no longer the 90s after all.

That's weird cause most of my local markets never got them. I was able to pick up a single copy at one shop.

Our area has bought even less Image than ever before..... especially lately. I don't know if that's a sign of struggle or what, but I rarely go to any of the shops in the area at all for new releases because they won't have the books I'm interested in.

I hope you don't mind if from time to time I hijack this thread, with a comic that may heat up due to current events.
